Free agent frenzy!

Jazz won't be too involved, but who should the Jazz go after?

Jazz will have 11 players under contract once free agency starts:

PG: Harris

Wings: Miles, Hayward, Burks, Bell

Bigs: Evans, Millsap, Favors, Jefferson, Okur, Kanter

Jazz will need to be at a minimum of 13, if previous CBA limit holds, which it likely will. Who should the Jazz sign?

No-brainer choice is Watson. Need a PG, he's with the team last year, seems to like the organization.

Jazz like third PG, so I assume Price will be back.

Not much of a frenzy. :p

Although, if the Jazz want to pursue someone, I'd like them to go after Battier for maybe a 2/4M deal. He'll probably get more elsewhere, though.

We are about to embark upon a truncated crazy free agency - however this can't happen until the deal is complete probably close to 2 weeks

Realistically, two veterans I'd take a look at:

Mike Dunleavy - Jazz desparately need someone that can consistently stretch the defense. Someday that person may be Hayward but I don't think it'll be him this year. Dunleavy plays smart, can come off the bench and won't shoot you out of games like Miles. He made loot with his last contract so he probably will be looking for a good fit rather than big money (which he won't get). Waive Bell and offer a similar deal to Dunleavy.

Reggie Evans - Jazz lost a lot of games on the boards in the second half of games last year. The future is super bright; but right now Jazz need a blue collar guy who can come off the bench while Kanter and Favors are still learning their craft. Evans gets plenty of hustle rebounds, has a mean streak and can be a good teacher to the young guys. If Okur can't go this will become even more a necessity than a luxury

Jazz should re-sign Watson and anyone but Price. I am sorry but he isn't very good and there are other options out there.

I'd do my best to find a backup PG capable of starting 15-20 games then roll the ball out and let Hayward and Burks get as much PT as possible on the wing. I think we've got more than enough bodies in the frontcourt.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was Watson, then a D League player. With the strict tax laws, I'm sure teams will be signing more low cost players from the D-league. No way we actually go out and pay someone like Battier, Reggie Evans, or Mike Dunleavy. That would be suicide to the cap. Just get Watson, then a minimum contract Dleague player.

Agreed. We should focus more on developing our talent; signing someone like Battier would slow the development of our team, and it doesnt really make a lot of sense for our team right now. This is the sort of move we should be looking at when were contending.

Whoever we sign as a 3rd strong PG, he guaranteed wont be getting many minutes behind Harris, Watson, and maybe even Burks. I would much rather sign a fan-favourite like Price, than some incrementally better PG.

I think Price has seen his last days as an NBA player. He may get picked up for a 10 day contract, but I doubt anyone gives him a guaranteed year. Too much young talent coming into the league at PG for guys like Price to stick around long. Am I off base here?

Sorry, I didn't mean a 3rd PG. I simply agreed with;

Watson - yes
Price - no

Yeah, I think someone would pick him up. He is a good defender and hustle player. He isn't a locker room distraction. Guys like this will always get picked up as the end of the bench player somewhere. (See the Collins brothers)

Watson and/or Price.

I'm hoping Harris gets traded. (Pick up Calderon or Hinrich [shooting matters])
I'm hoping Jefferson gets dumped to a team that can absorb his salary.

If the latter happens, throw the kitchen sink at Marc Gasol
If that doesn't happen or doesn't work, go after Joel Przybilla (defense is as much about culture as anything else, and they need both players and that culture)
Maybe Shane Battier
Jarron Collins

^This^ I cant see why we'd want a Dunleavy or Battier taking PT away from the developing kids we have at the wings now, especially considering the cap and the fact we aren't contenders. I can't see what that would accomplish.

I'm hoping Earl is back. I think Burks can handle third string PG duties.

Thats what I read somewhere that Burks has decent enough ball handling skills to play a little PG

What's everyone's take on resigning AK, apparently he is out a month or so from that nasty concussion, I'm not sure he is worth resigning

It will be very interesting to see how the numbers work out. I will not be surprised if the Jazz have to let a big time player go to stay under the tax. I am talking Harris or Big Al. I think they hang on to Memo because of expiring deal. He might be a big assest come trade deadline time.

So free agents will be a 2nd pt guard (hopefully Watson) and that's it.

If the Jazz can sign him for 2 years (or 3 on a front-loaded super-cheap deal), I think he'd be a good signing. His intelligence and feel for the game could be a huge asset for a young team with a new coach.
