What's new

Game 4: 11/3/2014 Jazz at Clippers. 8:30PM on ROOT

The Jazz have to defend the PNR differently moving forward. The bigs have to step out a stop the ball penetration and then get back into position. Right now the bigs hedge way too soft so the opposing PG's can turn the corner with ease, then both the on ball defender and hedging bigs are completely out of position. That lend to a lot of easy alley oops early. Later in the game the bigs hedge a little less and it lead to open mid range jumpers for the ball handler.

.. and needed rebounding.

But we're all hindsighting it a bit.
FWIW, it was an observation I made in real time. Thought Kanter-Booker was the duo to go with. Also thought Hood for Burks, which would have been a mistake as Burks woke up at the end.

Don't look now but Hayward is 19, 6, and 5 on 48% and 37% for the season playing stiff competition.

Black Jesus 6pts ,4rebs,4assist,4 turnovers

CP3 13 pts ,10 rebs,12 assists,2 to

this is the difference in the game

Stat watching doesn't tell the whole story. Burke had 2 turnovers because his teammates couldn't caught the ball. The other was a questionable call that rarely called. 2 of his miss shots were drives to the rim that he was fouled on that went uncalled. Not to mention guys weren't making shots when he found them. It's easy to look at the box score and form a narrative, but when you watch the game it isn't always reflected in the stats.

Same here. Pity we can't never know what would happen if we had Hood for extra spacing. Another idea I had was going out with Burks-Hayward-Hood-Booker-Kanter but that wasn't as likely.

He's having a decent season, thus far, but his boneheaded TO's really sour me. It always seems like they come at the most inopportune time.

All that being said.... he still wasn't that good. I like how he has gotten tougher on defense and driving to the rim, now he just has to learn how to be tougher for the entire game mentally.

Hayward averages the least amount of TO's of anyone on the team who gets significant minutes....

Also, on the final play of the game he was fouled across the arms by Barnes (from what I could tell watching the replay).

I never thought Burke was our future PG. Now I'm convinced that Exum will be. We should be shopping Burke now imo.

Some very polarizing feelings from that game.

1. The Jazz were not going to win that game because they were playing 8 vs 5. I was ticked a couple times like I haven't been for a while.
2. The rookies show they can play - I was completely elated seeing X and Hood playin well.
3. Booker is great. (For what he is.)
4. So satisfied with Hayward's game. I felt he 'held the ship together' there for while carrying the team.
5. So pissed when Griffin was stiff-arming his way to the hole.
6. So excited for Kanter's O. So frustrated on D in "no man's land" as Harpring pointed out.
7. Alec not watching for his dude on D who floats to corner for open three... killin' me.
.
Overall though, this was a great game, but just the fact that I have my expectations so high is good news. The Jazz will be competitive in every game (essentially) this year and it will be fun. Watching some of the ball movement a pure pleasure.

Yeah, but when he turns it over, he really does...that said, I have no complaints regarding Mr. Hayward. He's doing well. He had a solid game tonight.

Agreed I thought he was way too passive. And early on he had some mental lapses. It wasn't a good game, but it's not like he killed the team today.

And one more thing. I think we have to realize that Quin is doing pretty well and he too is a 'youngster' and so some of the things he's doing or not doing are some of his own growing pains. Also, I think he's experimenting a bit. It is clear that there is a great improvement conceptually and it will take a while before the team members are all doing the right things on O and D.

Yeah, Hayward had a stretch in the 2nd where he was making some great passes.

I noticed the Burks thing too. When we went on our run in the 3rd quarter we had a lot of momentum then Burks got caught floating/gambling off of Bullock and he nailed a 3. After that Crawford got a BS And-1 off Exum and it turned into a Clipper's lead from what I thought could have been a solid Utah run to put us up heading into the 4th. Burks really dissapointed me defensively today because I thought he had been subtly stepping his defense up so far this year with his mental discipline.

Griffin thing was BS too. He had one play where he used his off arm for a solid 3 seconds while driving on Hood. Then Hayward gets called for barely extending his forearm in the post against Griffin, lol.
