it's hard not to come up with a another explanation

Means everyone else is playing great and the lead is increasing despite CJ. As Dutch said, it's a worthless stat. Of course you could claim the +/- is great because CJ is playing shut-down defense. And that was true with a guy like Ben Wallace in his prime. Any offense he gave you was a bonus.
