Game thread: Game #19 : Trail Blazers at Utah, Monday 01/30/2012 7:00 PM MST

Kanter is a baby Godzilla learning to blow fire, when he becomes a full grown dragon he will be a beast no one will relish playing against. He is already nastier than Favors and that goes a long way in the NBA.

Kanter was great defensively, he was great at rebounding.

He was terrible offensively. I am officially worried.

He has a hard time getting his shot off underneath. He is really slow. He cant hit the broad side of the barn with a jump shot in the game. He missed 2 short easy wide open Jumpers, and they were not close.

Will he improve? Yes
Will he improve enough to be a solid offensive player? I sure hope so.

Good man to man defender and solid rebound man is not enough to warrant 3rd pick even in a weak draft.

I am cheering for him, I hope he starts to break out more than he has, and after a year under his belt wins the most improved player award.

He really just needs to learn how to use the backboard. It's so much easier for a shot blocker to block a weakly lofted ball aimed at the center of the hoop, rather than tossing a ball softly off the backboard.

What is his age again? Remind me.

Kanter is playing almost exactly how I woulda imagined Jonas would play like if he was in the NBA this season. Defense, rebounds, putbacks. Not as much blocks and even worse offensively though still sadly.

19, but his speed, height, jumping ability probably wont change. Maybe it will since he sat out for a year.

I also worry that he hits his shots in practice but chokes in game, that can change but... a lot of times it does not.

Like I said I am cheering for him, I am just worried for him.

With a rookie, I'm not worried. I'm more concerned about Hayward in Year #2. Not saying Kanter will ever follow the same curve, but Millsap wasn't much of a shooter his 1st season. He made his living going after rebounds and put backs, just like Kanter is doing now.

Ben Wallace couldn't hit a shot to save his life, except for putbacks. And he was even worse than Shaq on his FT's. But he played incredible defense and boarded pretty well. Oh yeah, he was only 6'9" and 240 lbs. and didn't earn a rotation spot until he was 25 yrs old (as a rookie, he only played 197 total mins). If Kanter is even 75% of Wallace, I'd say that's a pretty good #3 pick. I see Kanter as having more offensive potential than Ben (I've seen Enes swish his FT's), at least equal on the glass (Wallace was just under 10 for his career, and 12-13/per in his prime), not quite as good defensively or in terms of blocked shots.

Even if Kanter doesn't develop into Shaq, as long as he's Luis Scola/Kendrick Perkins, we'll be just fine. A dominate rebounder and solid low post defender? Kendrick Perkins was a huge key for the Celtics. IMO, Kanter is already better than Perkins. When will jazz fans learn that we're better off with some guys accepting their roles and not shooting/scoring every time down the court? We have 5 players and only 1 ball. Kanter understands this and does some of the little things that other guys don't want to do.

This was one of those games where I thought how in the hell did we win? This was a great win - I don't know how we did it with so many guys playing less than awesome. Though I feel we're so much better on defense than we were at the beginning of the season, let alone last year.

I was watching the Trailblazers broadcast. One of the announcers there talked about Kanter's future a couple of times. He said Kanter is 275 lbs currently, he said Kanter is a "good one" he can just tell, he said Utah got a good player with that third pick. I couldn't believe it but within like 30 sec of Kanter subbing in he said he thinks Kanter is going to be better then Derrick Favors in the future. He also said stuff like he is huge and strong etc.

I am not 100% sold on either but Derrick Favors doesn't get blocked by guards.
