Game Thread Preseason Utah Jazz vs LA Clippers 10-10-16

Does anybody think Hayward will have a say in whether or not Mack is traded? Keeping Mack might have a slight influence on Hayward staying.

So Exum gets a free pass for the lucky strip? Had he whiffed you'd be wanting his head on a pike.

Let's not forget that this guy is SCARED (edit)less to take it to the hole and score, yet he gets to the paint almost on 90% of his drives!

The strip was a little lucky... the lateral movement was great.

Exum is a conundrum... gets where he wants to but can't finish. I don't know how to solve that... reps are good but it also seems like one of those things that should come fairly naturally. Either way I still like his potential still. Will reserve judgement until he's played 40 games this year.

He showed great footwork and anticipation on the drive. Jamal, even at his age, is a hard cover 1v1. "Had he whiffed the strip", well duh because he wouldn't have made the incredible defensive play, that's the whole point is that he made the play...

Let's not fall in love with Chris Johnson all over again - he's a 3 who can't hit wide open shots. He's playing for his NBA life right now so yeah he's out there making things happen; but The Jazz need a back-up big way more than they need CJ.

Jazz will find a way to keep Bolomboy - he's definitely intriguing enough to stash in the D-League for a while and let him develop his game.

If burks isn't healthy soon we need another wing... CJ could be that guy. His complete lack of offense shouldn't be as bad if he can play with some guys that can play... last year his issues were complicated by the fact that he was playing with Withey Booker etc

They can keep both. Last 3 spots will come down to Withey, Johnson, Mack, Neto and Bolomboy.

Rewatching I don't think it was luck at all. He took away all the space Crawford had and forced him to go up without space. Great play.

Wonder if Detroit would go bullock for Mack? We either need burks to get healthy or to add a temporary wing.

20 more lbs. of muscle might help. I think he's just afraid of contact at the moment. He showed that wasn't as afraid during summer league 2015. He'll get back to that kind of play eventually. He'll get faster too which is a crazy thought.

Eh, this is over stated IMO. Even down Hayward and Burks (briefly I might add) the Jazz still have Hood, Ingles, JJ, Hill and Exum all capable of playing the 3 and/or 2. That's excluding Johnson.

Free pass? Huh, some of us simply said that was a really good defensive play. Do you think it wasn't a good defensive play?

And yes, if he got burned badly on that particular play instead then we would probably criticize him (like a few of us did when Austin rivers destroyed him with crossover in the first half).

I don't find this to be the incorrect way to analyze a player. Makes sense to me to praise a player when he does good and criticize when he does bad.

Feeling great about this game despite the fact it's preseason. Clippers wanted this one and rode Crawford hard and Chris Johnson and Bolomboy make multiple plays in the closing minutes; this shows how good DL is at spotting talent - when the end of the bench guys are making plays and aren't afraid of crunch time.

I don't know if CJ will remain but he had a heck of a game and did all he could do.

How could someone dissing Dante's defense not be a troll? One play good or bad does not define Dante. He has proven beyond any doubt that he is spectacular defensively.

I am completely happy with the way Dante is playing... not much talk about his ACL is there? He'll become more aggressive offensively soon enough.

Eh, I think there are times when you can diss his defense. He isn't perfect.

Overall he has been a great defender but I have no problem saying he played bad defense on a particular play in a gamethread.

I agree. At the end of the game I was concerned that a loss would be a damper for our deep bench players. The win on the other hand probably was a huge confidence boost. Our bench is going to be the key for us since our starting 5 will be played tough by other starting 5's.

Lots to be happy with.

Exum: showing some nice flashes on D. Can hit the 3. Exum 3D
Bolomboy: what a nice project to have. Psychical specimen, can rebound, and score around the basket like Sap his rookie year?
Lyles: Cool, calm, and collected. He is an NBA player. Nice put back jam in the 2nd half.
Hood: That wet J was back. He can lead if Hayward is out.
Joe Johnson: Finally we see the effective ISO JOE we've been waiting for. He will hit some game winners for us this year.
Joe Ingles: Looking more like Manu these days than end of the bench trash.
Gobert: Finally showing something around the rim offensively. Man he moves so awkwardly, but he's starting to develop.
Joe hasn't looked like garbage since the first half of his first year
Self proclaimed Trey Burke hates here. Instead of saying goodbye to CJ or Withey, why not Mack?

Mack had some flashes at the end of the game but those were heavily outweighed by inefficient offense, poor decisions and horrible turnovers. I'd much rather see Neto instead of Mack.

(This was not directed personally at you EM, but I just had to get those thoughts out)

Yes, Mack is my new "love to hate" guy on the team. I thought it was a HUGE mistake when the FO guaranteed his contract.

Thought he was awful in pick'n roll offense. There were two or three times he was in pick'n roll with Lyles. Each time he came off the screen and ignored the fact that Lyles was wide open for three and Mack ignored him. In each play Mack either turned it over missed a difficult shot or had to restart the play

I'm not too worried about his offense. He's showing the ability to improve his outside shooting. He's super young and coming off a major injury. I still remember Hayward passing up shots when he got in the paint. He will improve.

Yeah, it's fine to diss anyone for a single play, but to call any play by Dante lucky as if he doesn't have it in him is pretty ridiculous.

I disagree. Even great players get lucky. It happens. Sometimes they are unlucky as well.

Don't forget that CP3 was playing into the 4th.
