Game Thread: Utah @ BYU, Sat. 9/21 8:15pm MT, ESPN2

Not sure what it means that the Ute fans (Joe B. excluded) have stopped replying with words. Trying to live up to the Ute fan stereotype by finding it too hard to write sentences?

Not a Ute fan

The life of a BYU fan:

Their three best games come in Sept. All summer spent talking up how great they are.

Start out 1-2. Talk about firing their OC/Bronco.

Then the easy teams hit the schedule. All the sudden they rip off 4 wins in a row.

Their QB is a Heisman contender, their WR is the best in the nation, blah, blah, blah. If Utah is at the end of the year, then they talk about how they will beat Utah by 3 TD's and how all of Utah's wins were flukes. If they already lost to Utah, then talk about how Utah is lucky they don't have to play them now, because if they did, BYU would kill them.

Lose to Utah.

Play in some crap bowl game. Beat some crap team.

Repeat.

LOL.

I had to post because this is page 54.

What a sweet, sweet number. 54 wins. 54 points. 54 excuses from BYU fan as to why they constantly lose to Utah (what was it? Around 70% of the time? lol).

You are why I don't ever want to play BYU again. Go listen to Shaw after Utah beat Stanford. Nothing but kind words. No excuses. Talked about how great Utah played, about how talented Utah was.

At first I wanted to play you guys in KFH bowl...because we would kill you.

But then I realized that it didn't matter. We could play again in December, beat you by 50, and there would still be excuses as to why BYU lost. Utah wouldn't win the game...BYU would have handed it to Utah.

I'd rather play a Big 10 or Big 12 team in the Pinstripe Bowl or Dallas Bowl than play BYU. What's the point? Utah would win, BYU would whine, and no one would care. Playing another BCS team would be much more enjoyable than beating you guys down once again, and then hearing how lucky we were to get that win.

Over it.

You are why I don't ever want to play BYU again.

And fans like you are why I now cheer for the Utes to lose every game, whereas as little as 3 years ago I cheered for them to win every game but BYU.

LOL. Yeah, that's clear. That's why you feel a need to disparage BYU with 90% of your football related posts.

P.S.Must be rough knowing that every single football poll out there thinks BYU is better than Utah right now, despite the loss a few weeks ago.

Absolute lies. Just silly. Silly little zooby lies. What a grand world you must live in.

AP poll: Utah 4 points. BYU 1 point (thanks Harmon).
USA today poll: BYU 3 points, Utah 0.

So, in the two human polls, Utah was higher than BYU on one and visa versa.

Utah has played a much, much tougher schedule than BYU. Look at BYU's wins:

Texas - starting QB was hurt.
Middle Tenn - bad mid major
Utah State - starting QB was hurt
GT - actually has a worse starting QB than Hill
Houston - avg mid major
Boise St - starting QB out

Wow. You are awesome. Way to take down a bunch of mid major crap and wounded ducks. That proves you would totally beat Utah now, even though Utah completely dominated you, has beaten Stanford (but Stanford is over-rated and Texas is awesome, right?), took UCLA and OSU down to the wire.

You are so much better.

Back to the polls. I haven't looked at the BCS since before the Arizona game, but before than BYU was in the 30's. Utah was 27, 17, 24, and 15.

You know what's funny? If Utah wins today, they will be higher than BYU...WITH MORE LOSSES.

LOL. Silly zoob, football is for big boys.

Sorry, guess I should have said every single poll quoted in the article I cited above.

Yes, you are SO over BYU. LOL

One more tidbit for your awesome "national" team. Utah has played two games on ESPN. BYU has played almost all their games on ESPN. Guess what? Viewership between BYU and Utah are pretty even. LOL. Exposure is awesome, isn't it?

Also, you say I disparage BYU with 90% of my posts...even though the last time I posted in this thread was a month ago. You...Also, quit making up lies about BYU and I'll quit showing you how wrong you are.

I caught it before you deleted it. You mentioned that you're surprised that the Utes don't have a wider national audience, due to them being in the PAC-12 and what not?

Seriously?

Maybe because BYU is the sole DIV-I collegiate-representative of an American-based religious group numbering in the millions?

The fact that a supposed-secular college in Utah has equal viewership to BYU is purely embarrassing for BYU-- and wholly representative of their football woes over the lsat several years.

Utah State - better defense than Utah. top 25 defense.
Georgia Tech - 14th ranked defense in the country.
Boise State - higher ranked defense than Utah.

Not quite... the Ute audience is much more regional. What I said is that I'm surprised that more people haven't watched the Ute games because all of the Pac12 audience in theory cares about their games. That's a huge fanbase to draw from.

I don't find it embarrassing. I'm not sure why you do. Not all Mormons are BYU football fans, after all. I'm not sure what percentage of LDS youth in the U.S. even end up going to BYU, but I'd assume that it's small... perhaps 25%.

That being said, while the audiences are equal, the distributions aren't. Utah's more regional (here in Utah and in Pac 12 country), whereas BYU's is more national (here in Utah, then spread across the country). I suspect it's that aspect that made BYU attractive for ESPN.

You don't have to be an alumnus to root for BYU.

Every Mormon that I've met here in Canada is a BYU fan. I say it's embarrassing, because BYU should have WAY bigger audiences than the Utes, for very obvious reasons what I won't re-state. But of course, consecutive years of ineptitude at a sport will do that to a program.

Not sure how any BYU fan can deny any of this.

For kicks I did a quick web search just now to see if anyone had a compilation of all of the rankings/polls. Found this site:
https://masseyratings.com/cf/compare.htm

I imported the data into a spreadsheet to compare BYU and Utah. Looks like there are 113 total rankings/polls that include BYU and Utah. 86 currently rank BYU higher than Utah, and 27 rank Utah higher than BYU.

The rankings right now are as of last Saturday's games. Obviously BYU will move up a bit with their win over Boise State. If Utah beats USC they will as well. Interestingly enough, Boise State and USC are very close to the same average ranking (39 for USC, 43 for Boise State).
