Game thread Utah v. Portland. 8pm MST.

Is Locke a super homer of Favors?

Look:

"Favors is an elite defensive player. He will be one of the 5 best defensive players in the NBA, if he isn’t close already"
-Locke

I wouldn't be surprised if he ever gets to top 5, but is he really close already?
He is far and away the best defensive player we have on our team. I don't know about top 5 NBA.

Couldn't see this game. Must say the minutes distribution were interesting.

Is Harris injured? Does this game finally get Tinsley minutes over Watson? Is Millsap going to play more at the 3?
Yeah he turned his ankle with about 4-5min left in the 2nd Qtr. I believe the play was when he went for a steal while guarding Mathews and Wes nudged him and Harris lost his control and rolled his ankle.
Obviously don't know the answer to the other questions I would hope (match ups dictating) we would see some Millsap at the 3 but also see Tinsley play against the less scoring threat backup PG's and Watson when the back up is a scoring PG.

What is a defines "the best defensive player?"

Shotblocker? I think he and Hayward are probably the best shotblockers on the team. Millsap has the best hands/steals. I think Favors shows the potential to be a good defensive player... But he's not there yet. HE goes for fakes, is often times outmuscled down low, and his P&R defense leaves a lot to be desired. He's long and athletic... That's about it.

IMO, Hayward is our best defender. He can block from the weak side, stay in front with his lateral quickness, stays down on fakes, and can defend a variety of positions from PGs to SFs.

As far as all around fundamental and physical defense? I think Kanter is head and shoulders above Favors and every of our other post defenders.

He keeps guys out of the paint, bodies them up, boxes out, doesn't go for fakes, draws chargers, and best of all, HEDGES ON THE PICK AND ROLL!

He was getting beaten by Aldrich because every time he touched Aldrich he got a foul called on him. Rookies never get the benefit of the doubt.

Best Jazz defender? Hayward
Best post defender? Gotta go with Kanter

It is funny that you are bring this up after last nights game. I think it was Gordys poorest performance in about a months time.

You know Kanter ranks in the bottom 25% percentile of post defense? He does do a great job showing on the PNR, but his post D is terrible at times.

Enes Kanter is a solid defensive big who also struggles to defend the post. In fact, Kanter is a worse post defender than Biyombo, allowing a PPP of 1.015 in the post, placing him in the 16th percentile. Not only does he foul a lot — 16.4 percent of post-ups against Kanter result in a foul — but offensive players are shooting 56.3 percent against him.

Favors is clearly our best defender. He is a game changer when he is in the game and makes everyone around him better defensively.

Did you see Kanter or Favors guarding Aldridge last night? Yer crazy man.

I can honestly see this. He's not their yet, but has all the tools to get there. Aldridge had to work much harder for his offense when guarded by Favors.

He definitely has the size to a top 5 defender, I wouldn't put a player who averages less than 25 mpg in that category though. It's a lot harder to play defense when you are getting starter minutes night in, night out and continue to put out a defensive effort.

He's done a good job against other players in this league.

Alridge is one of the best post players in the league and got every call. Kanter couldn't do anything without being whistled.

I guess you chose to ignore that the league shoots 56.4% against Kanter when they post him up. He also fouls at a high rate. That is not just Aldridge, that is everyone.

Bad thing about Sap at the 3 is that we only have 1 big man reserve.

Right, because Millsap would suddenly be unable to play PF. And Kanter couldn't use the minutes.

P.S. Kanter gets 10 minutes even though Millsap played almost exclusively at the 3 in the 2nd half. Corbin's dogging on Kanter is my 2nd biggest qualm with Corbin, behind capitulating to players every time. So maybe Kanter needs to man up and be a baby, too.

At least acknowledging Millsap CAN play the 3 allows more time going forward (i.e. next year). Probably means there won't be an off-season trade of Jefferson (and certainly not Millsap). Besides, I think the true trade for Big AL and Devin Harris are their expiring contracts, and those become more valuable at the deadline.
