What's new

Gamethread: Utah Jazz @ Sacramento Kings. 6:00PM MST

I don't know, but I'm pretty sure he earned more confidence from the coach and in himself for hitting those timely 3s in the game. I'd say that was a good career night for him, even if the point total wasn't off the charts.

If we didn't have Rubio, Exum, Mitchell, O'Neale, Burks and now Neto all playing, Grayson would be getting some minutes. There just aren't that many minutes to go around.

If we traded Burks and kept Neto only for emergencies, Grayson would get more minutes and it would be the best thing for both his and our long term interests. I think he could become a good player if we could give him 10 minutes or more per night. We desperately need the shooting.

I've been telling people the bolded all season on other message boards. utah was both the best and worst place for him to be drafted. best for his overall development and style of offense, but worst in that he was going to have a big battle for minutes given the guard/wing depth. guys like divincenzo, huerter, shamet, and to some extent okogie haven't had to battle as much for minutes w/ less competition at their positions and more freedom to **** up. other guys in a similar position to allen are jerome robinson, troy brown, aaron holiday, and chandler hutchison but even they don't have the amount of guard depth ahead of them that G has save for maybe holiday (who is really good).

exum is who needs to go. i actually don't mind the depth of burks + allen as primary backup combo guards/wings b/c they both provide different but dynamic scoring ability. i wish quin would play them together more often; they played really well off of each other in preseason. they are also better fits next to mitchell than ricky if ricky isn't making shots. neto is a better shooter and passer than exum and should be primary backup PG. neto + allen together gave really good minutes and spacing last night as well.

On paper, I agree with you. However, Quin has shown no dedicated effort to play Burks consistently. So yes, maybe Burks helps us a little more this year than Exum, but the minutes Burks gets this year just to make us a little bit better are just wasted minutes that should go to the development of Grayson and Allen. The same could be said for Neto.

I don't see a single scenario where this current roster makes the Western Conference Finals much less the Finals much less contend for a title. I also don't see a scenario where we keep Burks AND trade away Exum before next season. So for the sake of development, get rid of the guy Quin doesn't trust so we can build trust in the younger players.

fair enough. the question is does he start playing G more (and this means allowing him to play through mistakes) so he's really confident by the latter 3rd of the season, or does he keep using alec more to help them get wins in the short term to keep them afloat. i think he should keep playing alec as is, and grayson's minutes should increase/come from royce's unless we need focused defensive minutes.

I think Exum needs to be groomed as a SG. Mitchell needs to play more PG and I feel that Grayson will also play some PG as he develops. We need to stop forcing Exum into a role where he doesn't seem comfortable. At $10-11 per year, I think he is an asset simply for his defense. We have to stop expecting him to be something he might not be, but appreciate what he does offer.

Exum needs to be able to shoot

he's not a perimeter threat nor smart enough off the ball to be a SG. he needs to just be used as a change of pace or defensive guard/specialist depending on matchups. grayson can play 2nd or 3rd string PG depending on matchups provided he takes care of the ball especially. he played alot of PG for duke the last 2 years.

I'm also not certain a lineup of Crowder/O'Neale has better spacing than Favors/Mitchell.

you're right, it doesn't have better spacing. o'neale can be helped off of and he's been hesitating and passing up shots the last 2 games. ideal starting lineup for current personnel if ricky can be more consistent is rubio/don/joe/jae/rudy. best lineups for spacing would be don + raul/G + alec/joe/jae + georges/rudy. best offensive lineup period would be a small ball lineup of don/G/alec/joe/rudy.

He has a better chance of learning to be good offensively off ball than he does in a lead guard position. I thought he looked better (or less bad) offensively last night because he didnt have the ball as much.

I don't anticipate that Exum will be a starting quality SG. So with that being said, I full anticipate that we will have the following over the next few years of Exum's contract:

Starting PG - Rubio this year but I hope this is upgraded
Mitchell who starts as a SG but will play some PG
Grayson who is a bench PG/SG
Exum who I think should be a bench SG

If our starting PG, Mitchell, and Grayson are doing most of the PG duties, Exum will be a SG and be there as a perimeter defender off the bench.
