geography challenge

I went to bed late last night playing that. US residential areas are easiest; tons of flags, and I'm familiar with the flora of each region. Sweden seems big on flags too. Russia is distinct, but HUGE. I could tell that something is in central Asia or Siberia, but given how large it is, I'm often 700km+ off. My worst guess was guessing France when it was actually Montreal.

Really fun game.

It is fun for sure. especially if you start moving around and find hidden clues like signs, graffiti writings on the walls, or cars driving on other side of the street, or particularly dressed people. My biggest screw ups are typically Australia vs South Africa and Mexico vs Argentina or other South American country. Actually the worst guess was off by 15k km and I get no points... Guessed Slovakia and it was New Zealand.

Love playing the geoguesrr games with the stipulation that I can't move my location. If you can move around too much it gets easy.

I guess you can continue being a casual bigot, then. Typical. Can't wait until a book you read opens your mind to Africa.

Don't get your hopes up. It would have to have a pretty vicious left wing slant. Something about gay rights and gender identity being suppressed in Africa might do it.

Gay rights is not a leftist issue anymore. It's a mainstream topic. You're just behind the times.

Which shouldn't be hard, as reality & facts tend to have that inconveniently left-bias.

Which reminds me-- there's a great account of rampant homophobia in some sub-Saharan African countries (like Uganda) because of American Christians taking their ******** doctrines and indoctrinations & swaying the local politics there.

Kind of true, except that most Africans had been hostile to homosexuality before the Western Christians butted in. It is, in fact, why they have been so successful in the first place. They preached to a receptive audience.

This sort of statement is really contingent on the given region you're speaking to. Homophobia is largely a reflection of introduced Abrahamic religions in the area. I'll have to find an article that I was reading about it

Now I've read that many times. But I don't think it's actually true. The monotheists codified anti-homosexuality, but practically all cultures had been hostile to it since the age of agriculture and the rise of male-dominant societies it led to.

One exception, out of thousands, is the Greeks. They seemed fairly accepting of homosexuality. Other examples I read about are pretty bad ones. The Romans and Japanese were accepting of homosexuality in some circumstances, and as long as people kept quiet about it. But they weren't open to it the same way modern Western cultures are.

The monotheists just made official the popular sentiment of their time.

I'm going back to work, but I recommend the book Sex at Dawn, which examines the shift in social norms when humans transitioned from their hunter gatherer origin to agriculture based civilizations.

So Geoguessr actually has a Twitch category that people told after I had been streaming it for a bit. Seems to have a bit of a following.
