Giggity

I never claimed an 18 yo sleeping with a 16 yo gf was legal everywhere. Just most. So pointing out that it's legal in some is valid, sure.

I don't even understand what you guys are posting about. All of my prior posts were speaking to the specific situation involving a person under 18 having sex with someone in a position of special trust in Utah. Then you guys took parts of my posts and applied them to completely different situations (18 yo bf having sex with 16 yo gf). I agree with everything you guys have said about the 18 yo/16 yo situation. I merely pointed out that MOST (NOT ALL) states, including Utah (the state the entire thread was discussing up to that point) allow that to occur without criminal penalties.

I took a part of it because I wanted to post about a specific part. If you want my thoughts on positions of authority then those are in this very thread.

Actually , I have no idea....
Every state is different I guess.
My issue is that any girl can imagine she was assaulted when she really wasn't , or intentionally lie it about to cash in , or for other ulterior motives.
Consent is a grey area.
I don't think the state or an employer (taxpayers and stockholders) should be financially liable for huge amounts of money to settle such disputes.
The dispute should between the assaulter and the assaultee.

McG, if you can find the tape on the 60 minutes piece about the football player I referenced, Brian Banks , it was an interesting expose on what I am talking about. I couldn't find it, but it's probably out there somewhere.

I know who Brian Banks is and have followed the story. Again, I think we've been speaking past each other. I don't disagree that some age of consent laws are stupid. I agree that some people lie about being raped for money, fame, whatever. I also think the Brian Banks case is a tragedy and have seen the 60 minutes. I just think all of those situations are very different from the situation discussed earlier in this thread - sex between a teacher and a person under 18 in Utah.

How about we all just simmer down? We won't know all of the facts until the video is released. I, for one, will wait patiently until that time, and after watching it, I will come to a conclusion.

It sounds to me like this girl was not sexually assaulted in the sense that most of us would think of,
but the defendant is in hot water because of the ages and teacher student relationships and the law.
I doubt that the girl or her family should get money from the school for this, but there is a good chance they do.
The teacher probably made a mistake, but the impact on her life might well turn out to be out of proportion to the horror of the crime.
All just a hunch, based on a tiny bit of info.

The big issue is the teacher/student or coach/player relationship rather than the ages. Just remember we are all innocent until proven guilty unless we are in the social media world.
