Gobert--when can we extend him?

Well, another team "setting the terms" actually brings him in cheaper (4 years and only 4.5% increases). But who knows, perhaps he'll give the team a bit of a discount. Probably not as below market as Favors, but maybe a few million/per. Jazz will negotiate up to the max, with the 5th year being the carrot. Gobert isn't quite there yet, but if he continues to improve he'll be one of the "franchise" players we've been hoping to land.

Yes, but another team setting the terms could totally screw the Jazz over by putting a player option 4th year and a trade kicker in the contract like Charlotte did with Hayward. I think that the Jazz could end up offering him the 4 year Max and have him take it, because then the Jazz would still retain his Bird rights for his next contract, which no other team would be able to do.

Give him the 5 year max.

I don't even care, just give it to him.

He's a game changer. He's already elite, and by elite, I mean elite at defense, and he's still developing, and showing improvement offensively game after game.

Just get it done.

There were quite a few people down on Rudy last year. Saying he was too raw to play, too much of a liability. Well, some of us saw the flashes, and knew there was something there. Of course he is and was raw. The point is he has the it factor, he could make plays, and impact the game. There was something there, and we wanted to see more of it. Especially in a tank down year.

I've never proclaimed myself as a CBA expert, and I don't intend to anytime in the near future. Nice having GVC around for dis stuff, & Core4 to a lesser extent
Thanks. but a MUCH lesser extent. GVC is definitely the expert. Used to also have one other but I think he's stopped posting (IIRC, theNBAnerd or something like that?).

Excellent point. Don't want him opting out after 3 years.

Dude, Gobert and his agent will say that they gave the team a discount with his rookie deal.

If Gobert is as good as can reasonably be expected when his rookie contract ends, ie something like 12/12/3 on good % in 33/35ish minutes, and hasn't had any significant or scary injury (more foot problems, back issues), there is no point even trying to get a discount. You offer the 5 year full max straight away and you tell him "we want you to be the cornerstone of the franchise". that's all.

This board has had many posters over the years that have been very knowledgeable about CBA stuff. Kenwood and BillyShelby come to mind. Ellis269, framer and Jazz4ever seem to know their stuff. I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch of others as well, including guys who don't post often enough for me to remember their names.

I don't want to spoil the circle jerk but Biedrins had posted same advanced stats for two years before getting his albatros contract as Gobert posting this season.

You're welcome to your opinion, but if I had to guess, you haven't watched any games lately. Rudy is freak of nature at 7'2" with elite length and the athleticism of a guy 6'8". Oh yeah, he also never seems to get tired. Oh, oh, and he also has a mean streak and plays like he has a chip on his shoulder. I could go on like this. If he can stay healthy, he is the player that KOC dreamt about his entire career, ironically.

The one thing I will say is that you always have to worry about injuries with guys this size, so we do need to qualify that all this talk is contingent upon Rudy staying healthy. I've heard some people suggest he needs to put on weight, but I disagree. He'll get pushed around a little, but the way Rudy plays, I don't want more weight on his frame. He needs to get stronger in his upper body, so he'll likely put on some weight, but NO NO to bulking up to go up against bigger players. Don't want that weight wearing down his knees/ankles/feet.

If we get Kanter at about 10M per this off-season and then extend Gobert next at the max, where does that put us financially in the 16/17 season? I'm thinking not in a good spot knowing Favors will have to be re-upped at a much steeper price. Maybe Hood. Heck, maybe even Burke. And that's not even counting who we draft this year. I just don't see how we sign Kanter. I would say hey, maybe at around 8-9M so he's tradeable but I doubt he and his agent will accept that. So I'd rather not lose him for nothing which means trading him before the deadline may be the best option.

I just don't know. I'd like to hear others thoughts on this.

Biedrins was never this good defensively, was always a liability on offense because his free throw shooting was atrocious, and had two testes that combined didn't come close to matching the size of one of Gobert's.

In other words, no. Gobawse is nasty!

Biedrins never had the motor that Rudy has. He plays mean and intense. He wants to win, he wants to start. He's pissed he got drafted so low in such a bad draft. Rudy is already a special player, and considering where he was last year compared to this year, anything is possible.

We throw the max offer the very minute we are able to.

We don't know for sure, but the cap is supposed to jump 25 million in the next two years, with 5 next year and 20 after that. If that happens, the LT will be over 100 million. Utah can go over the cap to sign their own FAs, so we shouldn't have too much trouble anytime soon. We're at 59 million now, so if we have up to 100 million to work with in two years, we should be fine for a while. There are some things the owners could do like adjusting everybody's contract when they get the big bump, so nothing is in stone yet, but regardless Utah shouldn't be in any financial trouble anytime soon. There is an opt-out clause after the 16-17 season for the CBA, so everything could change then, but as of now, we should be fine.

As for Kanter, I don't doubt Utah would move him for the right deal, but I don't think that deal is happening before the deadline. I believe trading him now would be selling low, and I also believe he's worth re-signing as a 3rd big who could also become a nice trade asset by the deadline next year. I think Utah wants to keep him, and although I don't know how high of an offer they'd match, I agree with others who have said he'll get a minimum of 10 million. As far as how much we can afford next year, that won't be the issue. Utah will likely be over the cap matching Kanter, so the deciding factor will be whether or not we believe it's a tradable contract. I don't think Utah blinks at 10 million, and I wouldn't be surprised if they might go higher.

Finally, even though I think Utah is fine for a while financially, eventually we may get to the point where we can't afford everyone. If that happens, then we'll just have to hope our FO has the vision to move the right players at the right time. As for right now, I like the way things are starting to shape up.

At the end of the day, what does Kanter really bring to the team that Favors can't? Favors post offense and midrange game have gotten way better. Kanter is still probably better in those areas, but not by much. He just doesn't bring enough to the table to pay him 10 million or more a year. Just sign cheap backups. Spending 5 million on a backup PF gives you another 5 million to spend on improving other areas of bigger need than your backup big man..

Also have dudes noticed Favors is taking advantage of his size mismatch on 4's now?

Destroyed David West in Indiana and was killing Taj last night.

Breaking news... league just changed the collective bargaining agreement just for Gobert. We will sign him to a 25 year contract and pay him whatever he deems necessary.... and we'll like it.

Agreed
Kanter is not alot better than booker at anything either. (Though he is bigger I guess)
