Men may face felony charges after toppling Goblin Valley formation

Editor’s note: Click here for an update on this story.
A group of Boy Scout leaders is potentially facing felony charges for destroying a rock formation millions of years old in Emery County.

The trio of men was adventuring in Goblin Valley State Park when they decided to film themselves knocking over one of the formations, known as "goblins."

They said later it appeared to them that it was ready to fall and might hurt someone.
In the video, posted on Facebook, one man can be seen leveraging himself against a nearby rock and pushing a formation over.
"Some little kid was about ready to walk down here and die and Glenn saved his life by getting the boulder out of the way," the cameraman is heard saying. "So it’s all about saving lives here at Goblin Valley."

Saving lives, one rock at a time...

I was just about to post this.

I think the death threats they're receiving is a bit excessive. But fines and jail time are definitely warranted.

The thing that ticks me off the most is that they're MORMON scout leaders. They not only ignored the scouting principle of, "Leave no trace" but are also are lying about the motives behind their irresponsible actions. Come on priesthood leaders. We just had conference no more than one month ago. Stop lying about your motives in attempts to escape justice.

Just admit it, you guys were acting like 14 year olds and committed a crime. Stop lying about it, be accountable, and pay your dude.

These guys are world-class buffoons... and their justification makes it even worse.

Yeah, they're acting like it absolutely would have killed someone had they not acted. They need to stfu and realize that the rock didn't need to be pushed over. No lives were really at stake here.

Are there screenshots of the initial Facebook thread? I'm just curious what people were saying in response to the video before they got ratted out and the masses starting piling on.

I think they should be killed. And anyone issuing death threats should be killed too.

I agree. We're all sinners. Has nothing to do with being Mormon, Catholic, Jewish or Muslim. Respect for nature is a BSA principle no matter what your nationality or religion. These "leaders" committed a crime and should have to pay fines. I don't know about jail time, but community service is definitely warranted. Make them work at a few national parks actually cleaning up and restoring trails, etc. If I were the bishop of their ward, I'd release them immediately from their BSA leadership roles. In fact, that decision will likely come down from the Council level as these leaders should/will have their BSA memberships suspended.

Should be kicked out of the BSA.

It's a good thing these scout leaders aren't homosexual.

Otherwise we might have cause to question these leaders' judgement and ability to keep our children safe......

Local news said these guys have (according to them) received over 100 death threats. God bless America huh?

A nice huge public shaming (which they have received), getting kicked out the BSA, 30 days in jail, and a **** load of community service hours would seem fair. Or death by the same goblin rock they tipped over

This.

The thing the bugs me is how they keep rationalizing for their actions.

The best part is how the guy filed a personal injury lawsuit claiming debilitating injuries like a month before he did this.

I like your ideas and support them. I don't think jail time is needed. As Kornheiser likes to say, this can be a perfect teaching moment for various reasons.

This is the new, new. It's the faux rationalization that the captains of the financial industry have trickled down to the masses. It's a lack of responsibility and the lack of acceptance that there are consequences to our actions.

These yokels are a disgrace to what the BSA stands for. The public shaming was appropriate.

If this is true, it shows you their less than stellar reputation.

I just got an email from BSA saying those leaders "have been removed from their leadership positions" and all BSA leaders are "encouraged to take the Leave No Trace training".
