GT: Oh noes, we have to play the Spurs 8:00 MST

Still don't get why Burks likes to go under screens on great shooters. He did it to Danny Green early in the game and left him wide open, then he did it later in the game to somebody else (may have been Green again). Other than that, our 3pt defense seemed to be pretty good. They straight up missed some shots, but I think we did a good job running them off the 3pt line.

Damn that was a nice win. Helped by the Jazz actually playing worth a damn and shooting better from the line, though they tried to **** that up in the last minute.

Wish Favors would be that motivated/aggressive most of the time.

Yeah, he missed a lot of fairly easy looks and didn't get down on himself and disappear, it was nice.

Is 20 FGA a career high for Favors?

Yes but Hayward steal when Spurs cut it to 5 and had the
Ball may have saved the game.

He gets a pass.

And he had the nasty restricted area fade-away while getting fouled the whole way to the paint. Hayward is just putting too much pressure on himself at the FT line.

Great win. Contributions from everyone. Nice

We even survived the PAC 12 officiating. That ref who called the foul on Favors' textbook block? Should be suspended indefinitely without pay and made to watch 500 hrs of clean blocks before being reinstated.

Agreed. Aside from his FT troubles he did pretty good to close out that game. If he had made that three the place would have erupted.

I continue to be extremely impressed with Gobert. Hood is also showing his ability to drive and get to the hoop. Very high on him right now as well.

To me the offense was nice from Hood. But he was paying attention on D, especially when he was off the ball. I don't think he is ready for a bigger role yet but he is clearly a better player than Clark, Murray etc.

I don't know if you can keep Rudy off the floor as much as coach does. Even with offensive problems he is still a Net positive on the court. He has a huge impact and imo as to get some of Trevor's minutes.

Enes had a really solid night on D.

Alec's on ball defense was legit! Like really really good but his off the ball defense is very much a problem. It's Harden-like. He is ball watching and loosing "his" man. Having said that we take it step by step! He'll get there.

Major probs to Trey in the 4th. He helped Enes and Derrick on two possessions. On the one possession he stripped the ball from Kanters man and Enes secured the ball and on the other play he helped Derrick on Duncan who had to pass out of the post and our team rotated really well.

Well done boys!
Agree with all of this
Great post!

Trey had a great game today. Just not any stats. He made good things happen on offense and put in work on the D. I am starting to wonder if we need to redshirt Exum. He just looks too weak and too timid.

One thing about this (not trying to defend Burks, but just a general statement/question)
If a guy sets the screen right and the ball handler uses the screen right, then it's almost impossible to stay with your man (without just plowing through the screener and getting called for a foul)

I have seen every jazz player and every nba player get killed by good screens. (Evans was killing the jazz with screens..... Hayward got stopped in his tracks multiple times when gay used evans screens)
San Antonio might be the best in the league at setting picks.

So you have a choice of following the ball handler around the screen, which allows them to go to the hoop and makes our defense scramble (which we suck at), or you go under the screen and the guy shoots the three and you can still get a hand in his face after going under the screen and around the screener to contest the shot.

I know that last night Burks went under the screen and still got a nice contest on a three point shot and it went in anyway.

Picks/screens are very effective when done right and are hard for every player to defend. Which is probably why you see so many pick n rolls. (The spurs are famous for running pick n roll over and over for Tony Parker on the same possesion)

You make Danny Green a driver
sent from a phone ya bish
Fair enough.
Just saying that if you go over the screen and make danny green a driver then there is still a decent chance that the spurs come away with a bucket. (The spurs are a well coached team and probably prepare for teams that make danny green a driver)

I can agree with your assessment to make green drive though since he is a great three point shooter and 3 points is worth more than 2.

I was mostly just talking about screens in general and how a lot of the time a player (and the team defense in general) is screwed if he goes over the top and also screwed if he goes under.

The worst thing that can happen in a screen situation is to do neither and run right into the pick imo. (this happened to Hayward more than once in the kings game due to evans setting great screens and rudy gay using them very well. Hayward was basically screwed and there was not much he could have done.)

FWIW last night danny green scored 13 points, 1 rebound, and 1 assist. He made 1-5 from three point land so despite going under the screen he actually shot much worse from 3 than he normally does. Could have just been an off night. Could have been that going under/around the screen and still getting a hand in greens face (like I saw happen a few times) worked pretty well.

The good news -Jazz are still 1.000 at home on Tuesdays.

The bad news- only 3 more Tuesday night home games: minny, GS, and NYK.

I hope we win a bunch in a row just to annoy the tanking crowd.

Another thing that I've noticed Dante do great lately - he's been chasing 3pt shooters away from the 3pt line. They usually step in and shoot an uncontested long two, but that's a much better shot to give up than the 3.

Also, people really underestimate Rodney's athleticism:

When he goes for rebounds it looks like he jumps really really high. I'd love to see it translating when he goes to the hoop as well. Hopefully with time it will happen more consistently...
