Had a little chat with David Locke

I went and got those free tickets Trey was buying at ESA and David Locke was there. So, me being the Jazz freak that I am, I had to talk to him. He spoke with me for like 15 minutes before he had to go. Here are some tidbits from our conversation I thought I'd share.

-He swears he doesn't read Jazzfanz. He was all like, "That's a Jazz forum, right?" Right, David. Right. ;)

-He says when he looks at the roster, he has a hard time coming up with even 85 points per game. He thinks for us to even approach 90, Hayward would have to average 20.

-He definitely doesn't think Hayward is worth the max. If we let him enter free agency and he put up monster numbers like 20/5/5, Locke still doesn't think he'd be worth max money.

I've always viewed Hayward as an ideal 3rd option, Locke views him as more of a 4th. He said something like, "When you look around at the top teams in the league, and you put Hayward on those teams, he's the fourth best guy. Like, look at Indiana. He'd be the fourth best player on that team...maybe fifth." I told him maybe he's right about Hayward at the moment, but a few years down the road I definitely see Hayward as the 3rd best player on a contender. He kind of agreed.

Anyway, he predicts that Hayward will eventually decide that entering free agency isn't worth the risk, and he'll sign an extension before the season starts.

-Apparently Kanter scored 14 points in 5 minutes while Gobert was guarding him in practice yesterday.

-He swears a lot more than I was expecting lolz. Stuff like how "it's so hard sometimes to not be like '**** YOU' to people who message me online" Yeah...lolok.

So yeah...

Dat David Locke doe

I think Locke is totally wrong on the 90 points.

Favors 15 PPG
Kanter - 17 ppg
Hayward - 18
Burks - 14
Jefferson - 9
Tinsley - 6
Lucas - 7
Evans - 7
Gobert - 6

And that doesn't count the other fillers for a back up wing player and Biedrins when Gobert gets in foul trouble.

I think he would disagree with you a lot on Burks. He said there's no way he averages 14-15 points.

I told him I can see Kanter averaging 16 and he seemed kinda 50/50 on that.

If Burks gets over 25 minutes per game he will average JR Smith type numbers. He is a volume shooter and with our weak bench he will get a lot of opportunities to jack up a lot of shots.
JR Smith Averaged 12 Points per game with 24 minutes and Burks has a worse bench and he also gets to the free throw line more than JR Smith.

Preaching to the choir.

Sounds like he was actually kind of cool in person. Not giving you the party line, swearing, and spending 15 mins with you rapping.

I like Locke a little bit more now. He'll never know though because he never comes here or anything....

Nice reverse-manipulation attempt to the universe to send Locke in here.

None of the media are ever going to admit they visit a fan message board but I guarantee that most of them do, and I'm certain they click on threads that have their name in the title.

Hi David. I love your passion, but not your announcing style. You're much better as a radio host than you are as the voice of the Jazz tbh.

Looking at this break down makes me think Locke may be on target. No way do the 3 at the top of your list have these averages. One may be higher but as a whole they will not average over 45 a game - and that would be good. And I don't see Burks Tinsley or Jefferson this high.

I think Jazz avg numbers will be like:
Hayward 16
Kanter 16
Favors 14
Burke 11
Jefferson 10
Burks 8
Lucas 7
Evans 3
Gobert 3
Tinsley 3
Would be 91 if I didn't make a mistake but I don't know about guys like Marvin, Rush and who else might have a good night and will temporarily be in the reserve rotation.
And you gotta keep in your mind not everyone is going to play 82 games so their team avg might be a little bit below 90 this season. But their defense will be pretty far up as well, so no biggie.

Mr. Locke,

If you ever do come here, will you please explain what you mean when you say 'pocket pass'.

Thanks,

Splitting hairs on point totals between 85 and the low-90s is an exercise in LOL. Either way, you lose most of those games.

Depends on which perspective you're coming from. If you're trying to put together this team so that it can score you're going to try to discount the PPP a little bit. Good teams score 1.07-1.08 on about 92 posessions. The Jazz don't have anything proven yet to be even a consistent .95 PPP, and they're probably going to stagnate way too much to have 92 possessions per game. Setting 85 as the ceiling isn't that difficult a number to come up with.

Enes Kanter in pnr is one of the most promising plays. Too bad he once again has no point guard to run it with.
