Had a little chat with David Locke

I went and got those free tickets Trey was buying at ESA and David Locke was there. So, me being the Jazz freak that I am, I had to talk to him. He spoke with me for like 15 minutes before he had to go. Here are some tidbits from our conversation I thought I'd share.

-He swears he doesn't read Jazzfanz. He was all like, "That's a Jazz forum, right?" Right, David. Right. ;)

-He says when he looks at the roster, he has a hard time coming up with even 85 points per game. He thinks for us to even approach 90, Hayward would have to average 20.

-He definitely doesn't think Hayward is worth the max. If we let him enter free agency and he put up monster numbers like 20/5/5, Locke still doesn't think he'd be worth max money.

I've always viewed Hayward as an ideal 3rd option, Locke views him as more of a 4th. He said something like, "When you look around at the top teams in the league, and you put Hayward on those teams, he's the fourth best guy. Like, look at Indiana. He'd be the fourth best player on that team...maybe fifth." I told him maybe he's right about Hayward at the moment, but a few years down the road I definitely see Hayward as the 3rd best player on a contender. He kind of agreed.

Anyway, he predicts that Hayward will eventually decide that entering free agency isn't worth the risk, and he'll sign an extension before the season starts.

-Apparently Kanter scored 14 points in 5 minutes while Gobert was guarding him in practice yesterday.

-He swears a lot more than I was expecting lolz. Stuff like how "it's so hard sometimes to not be like '**** YOU' to people who message me online" Yeah...lolok.

So yeah...

Dat David Locke doe

wow i mustve been standing right in front of you because i heard that entire conversation :)

I think Jazz avg numbers will be like:
Hayward 16
Kanter 16
Favors 14
Burke 11
Jefferson 10
Burks 8
Lucas 7
Evans 3
Gobert 3
Tinsley 3
Would be 91 if I didn't make a mistake but I don't know about guys like Marvin, Rush and who else might have a good night and will temporarily be in the reserve rotation.
And you gotta keep in your mind not everyone is going to play 82 games so their team avg might be a little bit below 90 this season. But their defense will be pretty far up as well, so no biggie.

our defense will be improved for sure, but i dont think we can hold teams to 90 pts.

Depends on which perspective you're coming from. If you're trying to put together this team so that it can score you're going to try to discount the PPP a little bit. Good teams score 1.07-1.08 on about 92 posessions. The Jazz don't have anything proven yet to be even a consistent .95 PPP, and they're probably going to stagnate way too much to have 92 possessions per game. Setting 85 as the ceiling isn't that difficult a number to come up with.

Enes Kanter in pnr is one of the most promising plays. Too bad he once again has no point guard to run it with.

Pick and pop would benefit Enes and the team more if Favors kept the space down low, but also the team needs its guards to man up and nail the 3's. Today's game doesn't allow even two bigs to create space for each other if you lack the perimeter attackers.

~ This team is full of gems because it holds many different level raw talents. Even using Favors and Enes together on set plays should be exciting to a coach but I didn't see any effort on that way so I'm saying maybe with another coach or Ty learns some tactics from Sloan.

All Favors has to do for that is stand on the low block and wait for the lob if his man leaks up to cover the ball handler. But you need a competent ball handler who can shoot and pass, which the Jazz don't have. Have no clue why you think Corbin doesn't know something so basic when he uses it every single game...

There are several other plays with promising results but the lack of a point guard is going to take away a lot and make things hard to watch once again.

I totally agree with this. I see 85 ppg as a likelihood. If someone wanted to argue a few points higher, I'd just say "ok".

Do you have any realistic hope that a Trey-Enes or a Hay-Enes combo will pan out? or, are we waiting another year for an effective pnr ball handler?

Trey may be ok. Despite his struggles shooting, he seemed to have no trouble whatsoever getting to his spots in preseason (and summer league). His pull-up jumper should be better than Gordo's, but he'll need to work on his floater (doubtful he'll ever be effective attacking the rim) to draw early weakside help.

Trey gon be the troof y'all. Don't you forget it.
It really is too bad you've decided to be a mindless troll. You had potential.

Anyway, just so people get an understanding of how bad Jazz guards were scoring in pick and rolls last season, here are the points per possession stats for their point guards and Gordo:

Mo: 0.7 PPP
Earl: 0.58 PPP
Jamaal: 0.78 PPP (just a shade under league average)
Gordo: 0.69 PPP

Utah Jazz: 0.69 PPP (29th of 30 teams)

There's a reason Ty went to "Alfense": The Jazz have had arguably the worst perimeter talent in the league since they traded Deron.

Didn't burks play a good deal of point guard?

I have no care to put much more predictions, and justifications behind the predictions, in this forum regarding Trey Burke. He was a brilliant college player, ran plenty of pick and rolls, and was the undisputed leader of the best offense in all of college basketball.

There truly was not much more that he could have accomplished with his college campaign.

Therefore, I don't feel compelled to speak much more on him regarding predictions-- because the college and NBA game is so damn different. I'm simply waiting for him to play for a couple of weeks, or months, before I try and diagnose his strengths, his weaknesses, and where he fits in this Jazz team long-term.

If a couple of jokeful "GO-BURKE" posts get to you, then I'd suggest you take things a little less seriously.

All completely true points.

I have no problem with one random drunk dude ****ting on my lawn. When every dude in the neighborhood decides to get drunk and **** on lawns daily, it's a problem. When someone who should know better joins the let's-get-drunk-and-****-on-lawns club, it's disappointing.

I think I'm allowed to have unbridled homerism for a player that I have watched and loved for 2 years, and prayed that he got drafted to our team--months before the draft took place-- despite him being out of our rage. If I manage to be more-or-less meat and potatoes with the rest of my basketball talk, then I don't see the big problem here.

But yeah, I guess this forum does lack pure, objective player analysis. But again-- the season starting today should fix that :)

Need vslice to return. Hell, I'd be happy to see BillyShelby around more (I regret being such a dick to that dude).
