Opinion: BYU football falling behind Utah

Utah has surpassed BYU as the most popular college football program in the state, accordingly to a poll conducted by Dan Jones and Associates earlier this month in which 402 Utah residents were asked to choose their favorite local sports team. The Jazz and Utes each tied with 24 percent, followed by BYU football with 20 percent and Real Salt Lake soccer at 10 percent.

The survey has a 5 percent margin of error, potentially changing the results, but the bigger point involves the declining interest in BYU football. The average announced attendance for the six games at LaVell Edwards Stadium was in the 57,000 range, the lowest since the stadium was expanded to 65,000 in 1981, as reported this month in the campus Daily Universe newspaper.

BYU administrators are quick to point out that dwindling attendance is a growing problem in college football, as the Wall Street Journal chronicled last August. But in BYU’s case, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out the decreased draw relates to the product...

...With all this in mind, the time has come for the BYU administration to strongly consider joining a conference for football. Or maybe it’s time for the Cougars to rejoin a conference, which in this case is the Mountain West...

Now you're just being mean. Adding BYU would all but guarantee the MWC the G5 spot in the New Years 6 bowls. Honestly, BYU just needs to forget about the BIG 12 and do it.

Dunno if I'm understanding you correctly, but no way byu to the MWC gives MWC an auto bid to the New Years bowls. It would just remain the same as it is now, highest ranked small time school, which most years probly would be a MWC team

The Non Power schools are guaranteed one spot in the New Years bowls collectively. That's why Boise St played in them. Adding BYU would make the MWC the undisputed best of the rest. Honestly BYU would have a better shot at playing in a New years Bowl than Utah if they went back to the Mountain West.

^It might be enough for BYU to actually get an invite to the Big 12. Schools from the mountain west were invited to power conferences partly because the conference was a threat to the status quo. The power five will not tolerate one of the non power conferences having a virtual lock on that last spot. It's 5 locks + 1 of the rest, not 6 locks and they will do everything they can to make sure it stays that way.

Did you read the post you just quoted?

It would (as is the case now) probly be the MWC every year, but there is zero motivation for the NY6 Bowls to make an actual agreement with a small conference like MWC, it would just remain best of the little guys, which would be MWC 90% of the time, but with no agreement in place.

Adding byu wouldn't move the needle much for the MWC, if at all IMO.

I do not think that byu has ever, or will ever be seriously considered for an invite to a power conference.
