Who do you think will be a better basketball player in 5 years: Gordon Hayward, or Derrick Favors? I can't help but wonder. I think Favors is going to be good, and maybe even great. Gordon Hayward Showed a lot of great signs the last couple weeks of the season. I really think he could end up being a star too! as Far as who i think will be better in 5 years, i am going to say Hayward. He has shown the ability to make plays with the ball in his hands. he is learning to make things happen on the court, and that is a commodity in the NBA. I may get a lot of opposition to that statement, but, in good nature, it's well welcomed! What do you guys think!

Favors SHOULD be the better player with his size and I think his raw skillset was pretty solid his first year.

Tough One.

I will go with Hayward because I think he can handle the mental aspects of the game better.

Favors has more raw talent, but I am concerned he can't handle the NBA from a mental standpoint.

Also, why would you trade a #3 pick as aprt of a deal to get Dwill. Good bigs in this league are rare, there must be something they did not like.

You are right that Favor's skill set and size is undeniable, not to mention his inherent athletisicm. Let me just throw this out there for you though. Gordon Hayward does, in some repects, remind me of Manu Ginobili. he shows great potential to be able to put the Ball on the floor, get to the basket, and finish at the rim. When Ginboili can into the league he was about 24 or 25 years old. he averaged 7 points and 20 minutes a game. At 20 years old, Gordon Hayward averaged 5.4 points in 16 mintues a game. His Basketball IQ is also very impressive for as a young as he is, and perhaps most importantly, he is really competitive and wants to get better. It will be interesting to watch the development of both players. Both could end but being equally important to the Jazz. And in a league where Athletic Big men are almost a must to win a championship, you count discount What Favors Could mean to the Jazz (lets be honest, we could never get past L.A. because of the length and athletisicm of Bynum, Gasol, and Odom). yet, even with all that said, i'm going to make a bold prediction that Hayward will be better in 5 years time.

I think they're going to have great careers together. I've been impressed with Hayward since the first time I saw him in person at the Sweet 16 last year and I was happy with the draft pick. He strikes me as a guy who really understands the game and allows it to come to him. While Favors has a ton of upside, Hayward's ceiling is even higher, IMO. The Jazz future looks bright to me.

Favors is a big and a great bigmen always have the potential to impact a game in more ways than a great wing (w/about a dozen notable exceptions). Gun-to-my-head, I'd pick Favors, but why do we have to pick one, why can't we hope they both will be great?

I wanted to see the option "As close as we are going to get to the next Stockton to Malone". I have high hopes for both and want to see them become the cornerstone of the championship team we have been looking for.

That said, I agree Basketball_Romantic. I think Hayward is, barring Deron, the most complete player we have had out of the draft since...well I don't know since when. You can see him shaking off the jitters and really grasping the pro game at the end of the season there. His skills are undeniable, including penetration and shooting. If he develops a floater in the lane, with his draw and kick abillity, he will be very hard to defend. He has a nice shot (ok excellent shot) even if they mechanics need a little work. He seems to be in control even when it seems he is playing with reckless abandon (great example was the lefty dunk against the lakers. I thought he was stuck and going nowhere then he sees the opening and puts it down with authority...smart play). But I think what will make him a standout are 2 things: he has a very high basketball IQ (and seems to be pretty mentally strong), and most importantly, he is fearless. That is the biggest knock on CJ from my perspective. If he had a bad play or the game wasn't going his way he started to play hesitantly and so he threw up bad shots and shied away from contact. If anything I think Hayward gets more aggressive when it isn't going his way.

Either way it is going to be fun to watch, even if we don't win a ton of games over the next few years.

Favors has more raw potential IMO, and he all reports indicate that he will do his best to reach it. That isn't a knock on Hayward who has his share as well. When push comes to shove I think I have to take Favors simply because a really good big man is hard to find and can impact the game more. Favors is a great athlete, he's 6'10'' 250lbs at 19 years old, he plays good D, he's a hard worker and he has surprisingly good mid range game that teams will have to respect. He can be a dominant C with good range in a couple of years and that is going to be a tough match for any team.

That said, Hayward will create plenty of mismatches himself. He is a 6'8'' 2-guard who can get to the rim and knock down the J from anywhere on the court. He also plays good D and his basketball IQ is through the roof. We should be in for a treat watching these guys grow.

Because he wasn't the #1 pick; which is what the new Nets owner wanted.

I wouldn't read into it too much - we are talking about The Nets here. Not exactly a franchise known for evaluating and developing talent.

If Favors isn't better than Hayward in five years, then something went really wrong with Favors. That's no knock on Hayward.

I think I am giving Hayward the slight edge, because I think he has more mental toughness.
Favors seems to be more laid back, and go with the flow.
I think both will be great players, but I would want Hayward to have the ball in clutch situations.

I voted Favors due to his natural gifts, but Hayward's ability to defend SG's, shoot, and create off the dribble blew me away the last couple weeks of the season. Very close.

I think Hayward in 2-3 years but in 5 years Favors should reach his full potential. Maybe sooner if the Mailman joined the jazz coaching staff.

Exactly. If you said 3 years then I'd go with Hayward.

Favors is going to be one of those guys who takes a few years for everything to click, then watch out! Look to Jermaine O'Neal for a blueprint. He hobbled along picking up 4 points per game over 4 years, then Boom! someone let him out the kennel. I think Favors can develop much faster than that, but that's up too high in the air to make a call right now. 20/10/2.5 isn't out of Favors' reach. With his offensive putback capabilities he could easily go 25 & 12. Five O boards alone will get him close to 10 ppg after he develops at the line.

Very very hard to choose.. it's like saying who had a better career - Stockton or Malone? Or even, Nowitzki or Nash? Kobe or Shaq?

My heart says Hayward, but my head says Favors... what can I say? I picked Hayward...

I voted Favors. But I think both players have a high ceiling. We could definitely build around these guys. They're both young and aren't even near their peak.

I have high hopes for both of these guys. I have to agree that it is going to take Favors a little longer to develop but in a 5 year span I think he well end up being the better player. But both are going to be very good I think
