Gordon Hayward isn't getting many minutes, and he seems tentative whenever he's in the game. Why not send him to the D-league and see if he can get his offense going?

At the same time, have him watch 2 hours of film on Manu Ginobli and Jeff Hornacek and take 300 shots everyday.

You definitely have a good point, but I think he'd be just as better off practicing with the Jazz all season. I'd rather have him if a couple wings get in foul trouble then some cheap FA.

His highest hurdle to clear now is his strength. Don't know how training goes when you're with the D-League team opposed to the Jazz, but I'm assuming it's much better with the pro team...

They need his depth in case of foul trouble. Unfortunately Price, CJ and Raja are all very prone to fouls. They have had a few games this year where he has played just because of foul trouble to the others.

Also the D-league is trash. And I believe he can learn more watching real player than playing in that league.

Hayward needs strength and confidence. One is unlikely to happen this season and one might. So I don't expect a lot from him this season.

Hayward will be very important next season if AK does not return, which I believe was alot of KOC's thinking when they made that pick.

I agree with this. Plus Hayward is playing on a team that is winning right now. If this kid was playing for the Washington's in the league he would prob. be getting quite a bit of game time.

Although I'd like to see the kid out there a bit more, no need to rush him. It's hard to argue with the results so far.

Lets start with his history. In the event you haven't read his wikipedia entry, click here.

So who is the guy? Lets look at some clues into what is Gordon Hayward:

"The younger Hayward's first appearance in the sports pages was not in basketball but in tennis; he and his twin sister Heather were featured in a regional edition of the Indianapolis Star when they played mixed doubles together at the Indiana State Open in 2005"
"As a 5'11" (1.80 m) freshman, he seriously considered quitting basketball entirely to focus on tennis; his mother persuaded him to stay with the sport one more year"
"He ultimately chose Butler because the Bulldogs' 6:30 am practices would not interfere with his planned major of computer engineering and because Heather would be able to play tennis there"
"He skipped AAU basketball during the following summer because he wanted to put in enough tennis practice to contend for a state high school title in his senior year."

Time and time again, basketball has taken a back seat, or even a roof rack to his other interests, and his family. Quite good of him, but questionable long term... will he stick with it? I dunno. You could argue his mother would be the deciding factor.

But with all of this, why would we gamble? Lets go to his college years:

"Bulldogs went 26–5 and won the Horizon League. Hayward averaged 13.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game and was named Horizon Newcomer of the Year and first team All-Conference"
"In the offseason, Hayward was selected to Team USA for the 2009 FIBA Under-19 World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand. Hayward was a surprise star for the Championship squad, averaging 10 points and 5.7 rebounds per game"
"At the conclusion of the tournament, Hayward was named to the "All-Star Five" of the event"
"After raising his profile in the FIBA tournament, Hayward was named to numerous preseason All-America teams, and was a preseason candidate for the Wooden Award and the Naismith Award prior to the 2009–10 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. He was also named preseason All-Horizon League."
"During the 2009–10 season, Hayward was the only player to finish in the Horizon League's top five in both scoring and rebounding"
"Gordon was also in the league's top 10 in field goal percentage, free throw percentage, blocked shots, offensive rebounding, defensive rebounding (in which he led the league), and minutes per game"
"At the end of the regular season, he was named the Horizon League Player of the Year."
"Hayward was also named a third-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American"

The kid's got talent, and can do it all, from the 3 up. His Mom doesn't think he has it for the NBA, his Dad wants Gordon to live where he could not. This conflicts with him. We can't cause him more conflict.. The worst thing we can do as a board is alienate him, and/or regret the pick. Fostered correctly, this kid is gonna be a solid rotation Jazzman for years to come. He should have stayed in college for a few more years, yeah... woulda done him some good. But when you're in the top 20, cash is king.

Lets get expectations down. The Utah Jazz are a title contender. You're expecting a rookie NOT taken in the first 5 picks to come in and get rotation minutes over arguably the most versatile wings group in the NBA, in one of the hardest systems to run with?

OK, so if he's not getting PT on the pro level, and the pro team isn't practicing much (or as much as the D-League), then send him to the D-League for a while first. You can always bring him back up, but as we know from other players, sub-5-MPG averages isn't sufficient for developing a player.

You cant send Hayward to the D-league. He gets significant minutes if Bell/AK/CJ either get injured or are in foul trouble.

If they send him to the D-league they can run the normal plays and call his number every time. Get him 20 shots per night. Then he'll be more crisp when he comes back.

I don't believe they run the plays, they may try but I doubt it's even very close. It's more beneficial to see how the plays are supposed to be run instead of getting into bad habits against bad defender's with a league full of ball hogs. He won't learn the correct way to run the plays, he won't learn how to be a defender at all, and it is more beneficial to be around some of the players he will eventually play against and with if he stays here.

They can't send the rookie to the Flash.
He dunked the ball in a game with his left hand, very Boozeresque.
He must be ready for the rest of the Jazz offense after that.

They can't send Hayward to the D League. D Leaguers can't star in their very own Subway commercials. Now if it was a septic tank service commercial then by all means send him down.

As much as I think it will hurt Hayward's confidence to send him down to the D-League, it might be the best option if he isn't going to be getting any minutes. I don't see how he is going to improve unless he gets more than 4-5 minutes every other game.
