This needs its own thread.....
Utah Jazz send Mo Williams and Paul Millsap to Dallas for a player or two Dallas wants to move and their 1st round pick in 2013. Possible players involved include Chris Kaman, Shawn Marion, Roddy Beaubois, Darren Collison or someone else. If the Jazz really want to keep Mo, they can swap in Marvin Williams, although I think Dallas would want Mo.
Why the Jazz do it: We're losing Paul Millsap to free agency anyway. He's going to want starter money and will want to start. He's not really an SF and he shouldn't start at PF here either. Mo is a nice player, but he's not the future. The rest of the starters are potentially free agents. The Jazz pick up a lottery pick from Dallas that they can keep or package with a player and/or one of their other picks to move up in the draft. This should net the Jazz a lottery player in the 7 - 9 range--Michael Carter-Williams, Marcus Smart, Anthony Bennett or whomever else gets hot in the draft. The Jazz will still have a later pick in the first round. Now the Jazz have a 5th young lottery talent to mesh with Hayward, Burks, Favors and Kanter.
Why Dallas does it: They need to clear cap space and rebuild a quality veteran team around Dirk Nowitzki that will help attract another big-name free agent to Dallas. They are on the opposite side of the player development cycle from Utah. A pick in the late lottery isn't going to help them re-open their window as a contender. Mo Williams gives them a decent two-guard front with OJ Mayo that spaces the floor. Millsap gives them a tough combo-forward who can play off of Dirk and who is 5 years younger than Brand or Marion. The Mavs can keep Millsap or clear cap space to go after Andrew Bynum, Dwight Howard or someone else they want in free agency.
Dallas and Utah are good trading partners.
