I don't think KOC promises playing time. His job is to get players and the coach's job is to play who he thinks gives them the best chance of winning. I would also state that Sloan would never agreed to it and I don't see any coach that would agree to guaranteed minutes.
Thanks for clarifying job desciptions. Sorry to say, but you'd have to be a bit naive if you believe GMs in the NBA never get involved in coaching decisions, and in a few cases, vice versa. Comparing Sloan to Corbin is pretty funny. Jerry Sloan definately had his hand in which players Utah drafted, as well as which players we went after in free agency. I believe there was interview in which KOC admitted he was a Chris Paul guy, and that they went with Deron because that's who Sloan wanted. It sounds to me like you think Corbin pulls the same kinda weight, which is completely ridiculous.
As for coaches agreeing to guaranteed minutes, I didn't say anything about a guarantee. I doubt they would use that particular word, but it really doesn't matter. If they talked about getting playing time as an incentive to sign here, then they have to follow through with it, at least to a point. As for Corbin not agreeing to something, I LOL at that idea as well. Corbin wakes up every day and thanks God he still has a head coaching job.
If "keeping your word" is more important than winning then the Millers should sell the team and start a church. Owning an NBA team is a business and while in business you should have ethics, the may objective is to win.
Promising playing time is bad business and would undermined the coach's ability to coach..
It is a business. It's a business in which Utah is at a disadvantage when competing for FAs. But sure, they should just say whatever they have to in order to sign guys, and then go back on their word. I'm sure that won't backfire. Either that, or they should just never use playing time as a selling point when signing FAs. They should just sit back and wait for FAs to come knocking on the door, and then only sign them if they're desperate to play for us. Sounds like a solid idea.
Promising playing time is bad business and would undermined the coach's ability to coach. I certainly do not understand how Corbin cannot see that Tinsley is the better overall player. I think a better explanation is that Corbin is inexperienced and has too many choices to make or he is just way over his head being a head coach.
I certainly don't know that this was the case. I'm just putting two and two and two together. Earl was pretty close to signing with another team, Atlanta I think, right before he signed with the Jazz. Then when he's not playing, he threatens to talk to his agent, and Utah caves. Earl is a vet who knows how it is in the NBA. I see absolutely no reason why he would go to this extreme, unless he felt like he passed on another opportunity, due to something he felt Utah said when selling him on signing here.
As for it being bad business, I think you fail to comprehend the magnitude of Utah's disadvantage in signing FAs. Playing time is one of the few things we can sell them on, without just flat out overpaying.
Owning an NBA team is a business and while in business you should have ethics, the may objective is to win.
If what you are saying is true then the Jazz will never win a championship. .
Nah, I'm pretty sure KOC knows his business better than you do. Utah will be in the WCF within 3 years, and it won't be because they stop signing FAs by offering regular playing time.
