Mitchell and Gobert, Burke were never drafted by DL or the Utah Jazz. DL does get credit for trading for them after the Draft, but this is not only obviously rare to improve dramatically with a draft-time trade but also very lucky. Either way, DL deserves extraordinary credit either way.
You left out many many busts throughout the last decade.
2007
Drafted: Morris Almond (amounted to nothing in the NBA)
passed on:
Aaron Brooks, Arron Afflalo, Tiago Splitter, Carl Landry, Marc Gasol
2009
Drafted: Eric Maynor (Out of the NBA within several years)
passed on:
Taj Gibson, Demarre Carrol (it was a weak draft, no doubt about it)
2010
Drafted: Gordon Hayward (obvious draft choice at 9th overall) Credit to DL
2011
Drafted: Enes Kanter & Alec Burks.
Kanter and Novak eventually trade for Pliess, Kendrick Perkins, Grant Jarrett and future Thunder 1st rounder. (Waste of Kanter's value)
passed on ahead of Burkes:
Markeiff and Marcus Morris, Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler, Reggie Jackson, Tobias Harris, Kenneth Faried, Dantes Montejunas, Nikola Mirotic, Isaiah Thomas, among others. (Huge Fail)
2013
Drafted: Shabazz Muhammed
Gorgui Dieng
Erick Green
Passed on, Giannis Antetokounmpo, CJ McCollum, Steven Adams,
The Good, WE GOT GOBERT THROUGH TRADE.
2014
Drafted: Dante Exum (Weak Draft, but probably a bust)
Rodney Hood
Passed on for Exum alone:
Marcus Smart, Julius Randle, Nik Stauskas, Zach Lavine, Gary Harris.
Traded Hood for essentially nothing and passed on:
Jordan Clarkson
2016
Drafted: Taurine Prince
Passed on:
Denzel Valentine
Malik Beasley
Juan Hernangomez
(Weak draft, easy to miss)
We made a couple of great trades to acquire, Mitchell and Gobert, but our draft record speaks for itself.
Lindsey wasn't hired as GM until August 2012 and didn't take over drafting duties until 2013. So you really shouldn't lump everything together like this. Let's look at Lindseys' draft history since it's what is relevant right now
2013
- Traded #14 (Shabazz Muhammad) and #21 (Gorgui Deing) to Minnesota for #9 which he used to select Trey Burke
- Traded #46 (Erick Green) and cash to Denver for #27 which he used to select Rudy Gobert
Now he missed with Trey Burke. He could have drafted CJ McCollum, Giannis, Dennis Schroder, among others. But several people thought Trey would be good in the NBA. Nobody is going to get every pick right. This draft still ended up being a homerun because he got Rudy right. Gobert is a top two player from that class and he got him at 27. Btw Trey Burke is quietly rejuvenating his career in NY.
2014
- Drafted Dante Exum at #5
- Drafted Rodney Hood at #23
- Traded #35 (Jarnell Stokes) to Memphis for a 2016 2nd rounder
The jury is still out on Dante. He's still only 22 and his career has been hampered more by injury than poor play. We just have to wait and see. Rodney Hood was a very good pick at #23.
2015
- Drafted Trey Lyles at #12
- Drafted Olivier Hanlan at #42
- Traded #54 (Daniel Diaz) to Portland for cash
I suppose Lyles could be called a miss. Especially when Devin Booker was taken one pick after him. I think Lyles has a place in this league though. He just didn't end up being a fit for us. Plus he was eventually dealt in a deal for a lottery pick in 2017 and Lindsey used that second plate appeaerance to smack another homerun.
2016
- Traded #12 (Taurean Prince) in a 3 team deal in order to acquire George Hill.
- Traded #42 (Isaiah Whitehead) to Brooklyn for cash and #55 (Joel Bolomboy)
- Drafted Tyrone Wallace at #60
Trading for Hill was the only Lindsey draft move I've disagreed with. I thought it was a bad move to trade a lottery pick for a near 30 year old on a one year contract. I feel like I was proven right too. I will say that the move helped in delivering a memorable playoff run however.
2017
- Traded Trey Lyles and #24 (Tyler Lydon) to Denver for #13 (Donovan Mitchell)
- Traded #30 (Josh Hart) and #42 (Thomas Bryant) to the Lakers for #28 (Tony Bradley)
- Drafted Nigel Williams Goss at #55
Homerun. Plain and simple. Donovan is a superstar. We'll see about Bradley and NWG in the future.
Conclusion: Lindsey is pretty damn good at drafting. Gobert and Mitchell are stars. Hood was a great pick. Even the guys who don't quite work out here find contributing roles elsewhere (Burke, Lyles, Tyrone Wallace). The jury is still out on some of our other picks. Lindsey doesn't get every pick perfect but no GM does.
LOL at your Nik Stauskas addition in the players we missed btw. I thank you for the laugh.
