How about a little off season nostalgia. This guy has a killer tribute series to Malone up on youtube in celebration of Karl's 50th.

Corbin needs to remember the basics and start teaching them again. The two things that made both Sloan and Phil Jackson (Tex Winters) so successful was 1) teaching proper cuts to get your man on his heals before going the intended direction, and 2) read, read, read. Check out Stockton at the .20 mark pushing his defender the wrong way, so simple and effective, yet lost in the NBA today. Then reading @ 0.30. Beautiful. Stockton's setup at 0.50 is so subtle it's hard to notice.

Check out how alert and active the other 4 players are on the floor when Karl has the ball in the low post. Crisp, well timed cuts to the basket. Solid picks away from the ball. Adjustments to position the 3-point shooters in position and maintain floor balance. Positioning for boards without getting in the way of a move to the hoop.

All because you had an amazing passer with great court vision with the ball.

Those were the days, my friend, I thought they'd never end......

Malone was so strong...not many players can hold the ball up high and "wrist" pass the ball like a bullet to the other side of the court like that.

One thing that stands out to me in those is how Karl always had position right on the block. He had every move he wanted because he always was where he wanted to be when he got the ball. Seems like we have had a hard time getting the ball to the bigs on the block for.............. well since Stockton left and they stopped setting that great cross screen. Stock set such good picks down there and the ball was always ready to be passed in when Karl got right were he wanted. I miss watching good basketball like that.

This, more than anything else, is what I hope to see Favors improve from working with Malone:

Favors showed massive improvement in his passing ability throughout the season last year. I thought originally that passing would never be a part of his game, but I think he could develop into a pretty good passing big man.

And my number 2 wish is seeing a high level of understanding in this area:

The last line of this is the type of "truer words were never spoken" stuff. I know I feel that way and have for the last 3 seasons:

Where would Karl be without illegal defense rules? The other players could make cuts and get to the basket more easily because their defenders had to float the middle ground - help out on Karl or defend their own guy. I always wondered what a zone defense or a modified zone or just throwing 2 guys at Karl whenever they felt like it would have done to him, how he would have handled it. Without Jerry constantly calling for that illegal D, hell I bet we got a tech per game on that call alone, how different would Malone's career have been?

Watching these I see that Stockton had a very under-rated cross-over. It's like the only cross-overs that get anyone's attention is when someone falls down, but he used a very sharp cross over to create space and get off unbelievable passes.

I still find it incredible that Stock and Malone played that many years and still both averaged a double/double for there carrier. Malone 25/10, Stockton 13.5/10

There never was much of a fall off in all those later years.

I don't know that I would call it underrated. Most professional skills coaches that I have seen still use Stockton as an example of the right way to do a crossover. Anyone that is a student of the game knows that Stockton had an unbelievable cross over.
