What's new

Houston..

I feel like there is no one here I disagree with who will have an honest conversation. There are plenty of us who can go around patting each other on the back for being so brilliant, but that's pretty pointless. I feel that there used to be people of various points of view who would provide insightful thoughts on any given subject and who would acknowledge points made against them on occasion.

babe, has pointed it out, this forum has a large mob (of which I am a part) with similar views on the current topics of the day, and a few people who shout at us with cheap memes-turned-to-text type responses.

Yeah, maybe this was a long time coming and I'm slow. I don't know.

Part of it, I believe, is that the traditional opposition has joined forces with the mob because of the horror that is our POTUS. Many life-long conservatives see Trump the way most of us independents and liberals see Trump. So We have Stoked, Colton, Myself, Siro, Ron Mexico, Harambe, Red, etc. all critical of the President and much of what is happening because he is our President. So almost all of the rational participants just happen to be on the same side for once.

I disagree. This forum has always been about the trolls firing out ******** and at the same time being thought provoking.

At the end of the day, this forum has been slowly dying for a long time. There are a few hangers on, but at the end of the day, most main posters have left en masse.

It only started dying once the thought provokers took over. It was a good place to have a discussion not that long ago.

Also "main posters" is something that changes with time. The forum didn't come packaged with its posters.

I have seen people discuss the demise of Jazzfanz's General Discussion boards over the years for similar reasons. Yet it lives on. I trust it will continue.

Right now, it's the deadest it's ever been. For obvious reasons.

I have seen some try to push a fantasy where the forum was the fulcrum of civilization in 2005 or something, where world changing ideas were being thrown about by some of America's greatest mental giants. Then they left, and the forum turned to ****, with inferior posters like Dalamon (yuck!).

Well, that's true. It was pretty great in 2005 (around the time I originally joined). Still, people whined about it then. We're human, it is what we do.

Maybe once the season starts it'll pick back up?

This. Everyone is in a malaise right now. Hayward left, and we don't really know where the team goes from here. We have Mr. Nazi-Potato-Head for a president. There are natural disasters all over the place. Just that general feeling of unrest generates some weird and stupid ****.

Florida gets hit with deadly tropical storms just about every year. Low-elevation cities on the gulf are susceptible to getting hit. Most areas aren't as populated as Houston, obviously. Is this storm really worse than others of the past 15 or 20 years?

Measurably, yes. You're welcome to check the Wiki's, but there's considerable difference in measurable wind speed, sustained speed, areas, adjusted dollars in damage, etc.

Yeah the dollar amount of the damage is not a good measure of the severity when comparing to other storms. Back in the 20's when they had some pretty severe storms a total of like 60 or 70k people lived in the Tampa metro area, now it is over 3 million with the requisite infrastructure and buildings. Even adjusted for inflation you just cannot really compare on a dollar basis. Really the same applies to flood waters when the land area covered by impermeable surface material increased dramatically setting up conditions for flood waters to accumulate far more than when the concrete/asphalt areas were much smaller.

Pressure and windspeed are better measures. This is an interesting wikipedia about the Labor Day hurricane in 1935, the strongest on record to make landfall. This section shows the records for the strongest hurricanes on record by pressure and windspeed.

Nope. Dollars of damage is a direct measure of economic progress and population growth in these areas. Based on the established measures of the force of the storm it isn't in the top 10. Out at sea Irma was the strongest ever recorded in the Atlantic, but it lost a lot of force as it approached land. It was the 3rd strongest storm to hit the Caribbean I believe, but in sheer size it was one of the largest. From the standpoint of miles of coverage Harvey was quite a bit smaller than Katrina, while Irma was significantly larger than Andrew, for example, but had a smaller force when it made landfall. In lots of ways we got lucky that Irma wasn't significantly stronger when it made landfall or it could have been incredibly devastating. Now the damage done in the Caribbean by Irma was record-setting, but it was greatly diminished luckily before it hit Florida.

edit: I googled it again and saw that they added Irma into the list at #7 for pressure at landfall.

The signal to noise ratio in Jazzfanz GD is terrible. There is no intelligent discussion to be had.

Sad.
Jason, colton this is a legit problem and one that can be fixed. It's up to you guys if you want to let this once vibrant forum die or not.

ooh wait we hsould listen to hypocritcal celebrities, like john cleese, leonardo di carpio and jeniffer lawrence. while those dancing monkeys preach to us, after they are done preaching i will go to a brothel and ask a hooker to give me a medical checkup, time, only thing i have faith in is she will give a mean prostate check up!(monkeys is not meant racist that is why i only mention white actors)

Their lack of civility and the basic give and take that is essential for discussion are my biggest complaints. They simply try to yell louder.

There is never a "yeah, I was wrong about that, but I still think in general X is true." It's all neener-neener followed by the popular responses of the day, #fakenews, #nothingburger, #blahblahblah.

They are not providing thought provoking ideas and they certainly are not doing it in a way intended to create dialogue. They are regurgitating right wing spin. They are all output and no input. They don't want to hear what anyone else is saying. They just want to make noise.

that is because your side has been wrong for decades, settling science decade after decade!

wake me up when the science is settled

it is pretty offensive, i lost 8 branches of my family tree to that sozialist hitler. so please show some respect to the millions who died under hitler.

trump is nothing like hitler! you belittle those lives lost

just kidding i do not get triggered you can say or lie about anything you want!

the dollar aamount of damage is easily solved. lets wipe out miami, and replace it with a desert filled with poophuts!

there i solved climate change. their will be no more big storms dollar wise in miami!

only idiots use damage dollar amount to peddle their end of the world ********

i gues this post triggered people for being truthtfull! so they had to neg me!

hahahahahaha

if the science was setled in the 70 80s and 90's why is it different from today's science.

it is the truth bro!

yeah to you the truth is triggering!

and he accused me of being triggered by lies.

what is worse getting triggered by the truth or by a lie!

Climate change is a pretty small fraction of the discussion going on in this forum, in my opinion.
