What's new

how do you guys feel about kanter?

I see him at essentially the same point of development as Favors last season at the same time.

I think he's gonna be solid, but never top top elite. I still dont think he was warranted a 3rd overall pick.
I somewhat agree w/the first part - don't think Kanter will be elite but I think he'll be a top-12 center or so...and if you can get an above average center out of that 2011 draft it's hard to find alot of fault with that pick. Kanter went so long without playing real, live basketball under the lights...it will be interesting to see how much he improves his game to next year now that he's gotten his feet wet a bit...and he's only 19! Way too early to make a call either way, but it's hard to be down on this pick.

No way, Tristan Thompson plays 10 minutes more per game and is a pretty big target for Irving.....yet he's doesn't average that much better numbers than Kanter.

Turrible.

Well if you were paying attention in class you would have noticed that I was actually pointing out that if I had to pick someone it would be Thompson. I didn't say he was. And I was essentially saying I liked Thompson over Val and Biyombo . For the Record I'm pretty high on Kanter. I think he will stick for sure. But will he be elite? I dunno bout that.

He needs a ton of work and time out there, but his potential is right there. My biggest gripe with him so far is his lack of explosiveness inside. I don't know if he just doesn't have it yet (or will ever have it) or if he's too timid and doesn't think of it, but it kills me to see him 3 feet from the basket and do a high arcing shot instead of just going up strong.

This is one of the two reasons I don't think he'll be elite (the other being he doesn't have elite length). He doesn't have the balance or explosiveness to immidiately go up strong at the rim, he has to gather himself before going up which is why you often see him get stripped either when he puts the ball on the floor and rhythm dribbles or brings the ball down below his waist. That said, I agree with you on the potential he's shown. We've seen glimpses of phenomenal footwork, a nice jump hook and the ability to absorb contact and still convert at the rim. Throw in his rebounding and physicality...and you're still talking about someone who - as he gets more and more game experience, hopefully polishes his post moves and gets coached up a little bit on keeping the ball above his waist - is going to be a very effective center against a majority of the league.

Maybe he can work on his explosiveness. In fact I know he can. He does like wrestling. Maybe he will lift a lot of weights. He just needs to do some squats and leg presses. And trim a little fat too.

That's what doctor Bluesrocker suggests.

I think part of Kanter's problem with lift is that he doesn't try to. I've seen him shoot the 3-4 footer basically flat-footed. He's not played that much basketball, and when he did, he could get away with his flat-footed shooting. I think he'll get this, or at least learn to move faster with his moves. Also, both he and Favors must learn to pass the ball. I think it's one of the most critical areas of their games that they need to develop.

Adding to what I said above, I think he must develop the habit of always going up strong. Hayward has learned this very well in less than a year. He very rarely goes up weakly anymore, and it's paid off!

Scouts sucked on him.

They made him out to be this Memo/Boozer offensive juggernaut who sucked defensively.

He has shown however, to be the complete opposite. His offensive game seems raw to me. He seems unsure of himself. Doesn't know what to do exactly when the ball is in his hands.

His defense is his strong point. Man can that boy defend!

At the very worst, he's Kendrick Perkins with a better post game.

I've been thinking about Perkins as well. Kanter is already ranked in the top 10 /48 in rebounding, while Perkins is ranked 53rd. Perkins’ Synergy PPP (points/possession allowed) on defense is .81, while Kanter’s is .86 (he’s still 19). Kanter has shown that he can score points (against Bynum; Nike Hoop Summit), so he could be very solid on both ends of the court. At 19, Bynum averaged 12.8 & 9.7 (2.6 blocks)/36, and Kanter is averaging 12.2 & 12 (about 1 block)/36.

I'm glad that you posted that because I was just going to say,

Kanter>Bynum at 19

Kanter has a better motor and I can see him progressing much faster than Bynum.

Big guys develop slower, and his development will be slower because he never played in college. Yet he can already rebound and defend and has shown improvement at the offensive end.

Kanter has shown flashes of his scoring ability (Nike Hoop Summit; against Bynum; FIBA Tournament) and has already proven to be an elite rebounder/defender at age 19 (though, in terms of basketball experience, he might be more like a 17 year old). Very, very bright future. And I believe he's a fast learner, he just needs to get the minutes and we'll see a lot of progress fairly soon.

gorgeous thread. love seeing kanter receive so much appreciation without prejudice by people who mostly never saw him on the court out of nba. well to tell the truth, no one did! what he needs is a pair of balls and for that, minutes on the court with being the target man to score. give the bull some responsibility. trust him. he will destroy the glass to avoid disappointing you ty!

Enes Kanter seems to do the same move over and over again. You guys probably all know what move I am talking about. The funny thing is he rarely did that move at the Nike Hoops Summit (I think he tried it once at 1:09 got it stripped almost but was able to recover it and score)

I want to see the move at 0:37 or 3:13

I think there's a lot more to Kanter's offensive arsenal than what we're seeing right now, the coaching staff has just supposedly asked him to focus on rebounding and post moves. I hope that limitation doesn't hinder his offensive development, and they give him more freedom next season.
