What's new

How good or bad is Enes Kanter. Really.

I think he won't be any worse than Boom Bitches...

Having said that... I don't see him being the next Dwight Howard, Dirk, and Pau Gasol that so many people have compared him to... Or what he has compared himself to...

Personally, I think he should be shooting for Luis Scola. A tough big man down low who eats up rebounds, will occasionally surprise you with a post move, and plays with a lot of energy.

I don't see how there can be any idea. Even the lack of serious competition doesn't necessarily mean anything. Guys like Garnett or Stoudemire came right out of high school ready to play with the big boys. But they're obviously rare exceptions. So realistically, I'm not expecting much of anything. I just want to see what his game looks like against pros so I can get a feel for what type of player he could become down the road.
The reasons Garnett, Stoudamire, or whatever HS player don't work as comparisons are that Kanter played downright awful competition even for HS standards, then sat a year, and now won't have much of a training camp and is the 4th or 5th big on the team.

You're right about the rest. We don't know. He could come roaring out the gate, but I think he's going to look overmatched out there for a while because of the reasons already mentioned. The thing I build my hope around was his simply stunning growth on the Turkish national team where he went from buried on the bench and looking lost when he did play to the clear-cut best player (and more importantly, contributor) on the team.

But I'm going to be patient. That is, unless he comes roaring at the gate, at which point, my desire for Big Al to get dumped to the most willing will reach fever-pitch.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that after a season or two, I'll have an opinion of how good or bad he is.

Let the kid play before throwing a label on him.

Many were calling Hayward a bust mid way through the season. People will need to have some patience with Kanter.

I've actually thought that recently. I see some similarities in how the Hayward pick was perceived and the Kanter pick. I don't think the Kanter pick is as controversial or polarized, but still. The criticisms of both players seem to be the same, but I also believe their strengths - respective to their role/position - to be very similar as well.

Hayward had a proven resume to go on. Kanter has nothing but a handful of good garbage man performances at FIBA, and a really good All-Star game.

That's what KOC said in his interview a day or two ago. He said he expected Kanter to be Hayward in that respect, but perhaps even more so.

Also the bust predictions come out when someone is not obviously athletic. I think there is enough evidence that Kanter is appears to be physically in the league but he's such a mystery when it comes his actual BB IQ.

Valaciunas didn't get as much playing time, but I clearly remember him packing the **** out of Marc Gasol.

And got that against the best team in 16 minutes.

Other than that my memory is terrible and I honestly don't remember much other than Kanter looked good cleaning things up and was the spazziest pick setter I have seen in a while.

I've stayed out of the Kanter concersation for the last 6 months or so. It became clear that most on this board would prefer to speculate blindly than get information from someone who's spent a lot of time around Kanter. I won't re-hash it all (the good and the bad) because I don't want to defend the difference between sharing empirical knowledge and homerism (even though I was fair in my assessments of all UK players).

Having said that, to say that Kanter will be a bust or a star is purely speculative and should carry little passion/confidence of that guess, either way.

I think if Kanter was allowed to play at Kentucky last year, he would have been one of the top two picks of the draft. (Personally, I think Derrick Williams could/should have gone #1.)

He's been playing pro-ball in Europe since he was a teenager. I'm not worried about his IQ.

I think people are going to have a tough time keeping him off the glass and away from the paint. He's just big and strong, and he has a high motor. And he's clearly got some work ethic or he wouldn't be in the shape he's in. He can play in both the high post and low post, as well as hit a baseline jumper. He plays like a two-way big, something the Jazz haven't had in....well, maybe ever.

My expectations are pretty high. The Jazz's expectations must be pretty high too, or they wouldn't have taken him over Valanciunas, Vesely, Tristan Thompson and Brandon Knight. I think his floor is Rony Seikaly.

Also, Valanciunas isn't big enough to play center in a half-court oriented team, at least not right now. He's a good prospect though. Could also be a top-5 center in the league if he bulks up and polishes his shooting touch. The fact he's going to Toronto is going to keep him from being relevant for a while.

If you are playing the odds, he will most likely be something in between.

Can't disagree with that ..

Also, definitions get blurry. I've always said that Kanter will be a star rebounder, never a shot-blocker, an above-average scorer. I project him to be more star than bust, but those same stats, for someone else, may be on the bust side.

If by year 3 he's averaging 16 & 9, I'd say we made the right pick.

I've always been a homer, so I think, given minutes, he could easily get there.

I think Kanter has a very bright future....as a PF. In fact everything points to the fact he should play PF: good foot speed, decent range on jumper, good stamina. He would have no problem guarding any PF in this league, and has the post up game to dominate them on the offensive end.
