How will the offensive foul changes affect the Jazz?

The pessimism is understandable and warranted, but I'm going to ignore it. These rule changes will make perimeter defenders even more valuable.

I see that going the other way. When you make defense easier, it makes defenders easier to find.

I might not have phrased that exactly like I meant to. With the old rules it was almost impossible to play defense. Good offense was always going to beat good defense. The only way to build a team was to try and outgun everyone. Now teams can put greater importance on finding players that can defend.

In general I think we participate less in the bull **** fouls... we likely benefit from anything that cracks down on the BS... so I think we are better off.

I also think we won't see much difference. The way the game is officiated is too litigious. I think they could do better by just saying "hey is this basketball?" and calling the game that way. Like when a guy nudges into a player and because he is able to stand as a statue and go limp as he hits the ground that is a foul... but really that's not basketball. Guy jumps backwards/sideways whatever... that's not basketball. Harden raises his arms up to a defenders hand that is literally at his shoulders and then flops like a fish.. that's not basketball.

Generally, I think this is true. I think Mitchell is the exception unfortunately He had a huge spike in FTr last season and that was great...but he was definitely aided by some new tricks he picked up and those are supposed to be targeted by the new rules.

I will say this...I think it will have a lesser effect than people think. Not necessarily because refs won't enforce it well enough, but because we probably overestimate the amount of flopping that goes on. It's so annoying and ugly to watch it's bound to have a bigger impact on fans.

I just hope it's enough that guys can start to play normal defense against everyone. For the extreme cases like Trae or Harden defenders play in exaggerated ways just to avoid the flopping and flailing. I hope the NBA can get that stuff out of the game because it's disgusting to watch. I think they need to go further and just be very lenient on any contact that is initiated by the offensive player. Luka and Giannis can be just as devastating by repeatedly ramming into defenders until they get a call.

Well here's my contrarian take: these changes will elevate less talented players and the game will become less watchable.

Wow, I guess different strokes for different folks and all, but I don't get how you can enjoy watching players pull this garbage and shoot a bunch of free throws.
This. Rockets games were nearly unwatchable with Harden flopping and flailing his way to a dozen free throws every game.

Locke was explaining the impact on length of game as well.

Tough thing is qualifying any of this as good or bad. Mitchell already didn't get legit calls because he is so strong so they ignored what would be foul contact on other players, so his reducing isn't necessarily a good thing. They need to identify what they termed "basketball plays" and "non-basketball plays" to really see if there has been an improvement. But if the goal is just reducing fouls then it looks like for this small group of players they did that somewhat.

It's going to have a huge effect. The rule basically brings back "reasonable" hand-checking. It's going to hurt the ultra skilled players who have the sleight of hand to punish defenders who hand check on the perimeter. They were never "BS" calls, they were just extremely skilled players forcing refs to call the rules to the definition.

It will elevate perimeter defenders a bit and it will lower the shooting percentages as players try to see what is and what isnt considered a foul on those types of plays.

Being 4 games into the season I'm surprised we have numbers that mean much.
Also, even 1 game in I was expecting Harden to be at the top.

Thanks for posting this, it's interesting to watch.

4 games. The data does not mean much.
