What's new

I booked a condo between Gateway Mall and City Creek

Dr. Jones, I'd love it if you tried Cupbob. I think it's pretty meh, but it gets crazy good reviews.

Not sure if this is going to come through, but here's my yelp review for them: https://www.yelp.com/biz/cupbop-kor...opup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct)

Looks like it doesn't work. Anyway, here's the text from my yelp review:

I have had that experience with them once out of 5 times eating there. I think its pretty great, but not the most amazing thing ever.

I would stick with the national chains. Food in SLC is gutter ****e.

I work with a lot of the yuppie types who try to outdo each other finding the better restaurant. They rave about places and constantly moan about, say, Dickey's Barbecue while eating at a locally owned barbecue joint. Every single time I've eaten with them I've been disappointed and prefer a Dickey's 10x more and the prices are better. The food here really sucks.

The smaller, cheaper places I frequent near Gateway are:

El Asadero - They have the best salsa I've ever had as well as the best asada smothered burrito. It's some weird orange verde sauce.

Sunny's Bistro - $6 bento box and I've never had a bad meal. The Oyster Beef is good.

Lofte's Bar - Good selection of burgers (Wagyu, Buffalo, Elk, Kangaroo, Alligator, etc.). The sides are always good and the daily specials are generally pretty solid. Stay away from the french dip though, it's trash.

Siegfried's - Some great dishes and also some typical ****ty bland German food.

For pizza, the Hawaiian place east of the ballpark is pretty damn good. I don't know if it's still open but google maps says the address is 43 W. 1300 South. It has a green roof.

Ohmai - Excellent Vietnamese sandwich shop with rice and noodle bowls.

The ballpark is on 1300 S, did you mean to say 43 E (or W) and 1300 S?

I'll have to give it a try next time they have it at my work. I'm not as spice hard *** as you but am big on having more than enough sauce.

Also, Dr. Jones, Redrock is a common recommendation and has always been good enough for me.

There is good food in SLC. It's no NYC or L.A. or Chicago, and not even like those cities' little brothers. But there is good food in SLC.

Oh mai is really good. Although they have funky hours now because I think they focus on catering lunches to businesses. But they are good. Just south of there is a more authentic and good Vietnamese place called La-Cai.

The best mexican food place in SLC is Chunga's. I used to love the one in Provo and was sad when they went out of business and very happy to discover their original restaurant in SLC is still up and running. I saw one of their trucks driving and followed it back to the restaurant. I guess I could have googled their address but following them back to delicious food seemed like a more exciting story. Plus they were so happy when I told them what I was doing they gave me a free lunch.

Oh Mai's sandwiches are pretty good. Their pho sucks tho. There is no great pho in SLC. Best bet is to try the pho places in West Valley, like Pho Hoa, Pho Cali, and Pho 99.

I'm gonna have to try La-Cai. Manu looks good, but I get the impression their pho is in smaller portions and a little bit pretentious?

Tell me another city that has population under 200,000 in the USA that has better food. SLC does not compete with real big cities but they are way ahead of other cities their own size. Having been to most major US cities I would rank it in the top 20. They have good diversity in food as well.

Really tho, SLC has more like a million people. Only downtown to Sugarhouse has 200,000 people.

They are smaller portions but pretty good. They do seem to think their food is more authentic than other places, so I guess a little pretentious.

All of Salt Lake County is about 1 million but that is a very large area. I guess SLC metro is 1 million but that is still a pretty small compared to most major metros, 48th in the USA. But most metros are a little more dense than the very spread out Salt lake metro.

I would put Honolulu on the list of places with better food that are around the same size.

Odd to me but I just checked and Salt Lake City metro is only 2X bigger than Provo Metro.

I always considered the SLC metro area to include Provo and Ogden. I'm probably wrong, though.

If you mean La Caille (the place near the mouth of Little Cottonwood, the grounds and atmosphere are fantastic (swans, buxom babes, gorgeous landscaping, old world architecture) but the food is almost always terrible. It's a crime that such a beautiful restaurant consistently serves such crap food. And it's very pricey.

I have actually never ordered the Pho at Oh Mai, I always get the bowl or a sandwich. Do you not like La Cai? I only started going there because multiple people I know from Vietnam told me it was the best and most authentic place in Utah. It is pretty good.

No, La Cai Noodle house.

La Caille is like most way overpriced restaurants and the food is okay. They are more focused on the environment, mood and presentation of the food than the actual food. I almost never like the fancy style restaurants.

No, that's a French place that has gone through a few owners since it was good back around the 90s. And maybe it wasn't even good then, it was just the place you would think of if you thought fancy dining in SLC.

La-Cai is a vietnamese place that probably picked their name as a play on La Caille.

Never tried it. Maybe I'll try it today if I decide to take a couple of hours lunch break.
