I miss old man Jerry Sloan.

I'll admit I was one of the many demanding a coaching change. Hindsight though I would love to see what Sloan could have done with this team under his wing.

I miss him too,love that guy, but I don't think he had the years in him. He seemed really out of it at his retirement ceremony this year....it depressed the hell out of me watching him.
 
Meh.

I definitely don't miss him as coach though I do miss his personality. He had 23 years -- the longest tenure of any coach -- to help win the championship for this team. That was an ample amount of time. In those 23 years many things changed both in the culture of the game and the culture of the country. In my opinion, he did not adapt the way Popovich adapted.

@ Duck: I thought the same thing. When I watched that segment of the raising of his jersey, it seemed like he was suffering from Alzheimers. It made me sad.
 
Pretty obvious though Sloan was declining, he just didn't have it anymore and health wise... depressing.

Look, I would do terrible things to Jerry Sloan. But he's 72, it's time to move on folks. Lose your inhibitions. Let him go.

Believe me. Sloan's not out of it at all. If he decided to take a job, he'd be a top 5 coach tomorrow.

Sloan leaving was a result of Jazz mgmt not backing him up disciplining Dwill IMO.

I blame the FO for Sloan really not leaving on his terms (though they try to make us believe that)

He has plenty of fight left in him.
 
I liked this cute girl in college too but times change and so do people. Did you really think Sloan was going to coach forever? I think many people need to go back and reread some of the anti-Sloan comments about his rotation and not guarding the 3 pt line, not shooting enough 3 pts. I definitely think he would have gotten more out of this team but would that have been a good thing? The guy had 23 years to do his thing. He did it very well and should have been COY and won the 1998 championship but unfortunately these things didn't happen so we have to move on. The thing I miss most about Jerry is his interviews and one liners but I was ready for a change away from the S&M years because that NBA doesn't exist anymore. Sad but true. I wonder what that girl is doing these days, I am sure she doesn't look the same..Neither do I. I guess what I am saying is get over Jerry he is done coaching for the Jazz.

His name came up quite a bit this past off season when a job was open and then he became a consultant to the Jazz.

Yea, it's like when posters forget they posted something and do it again. Sad really, when they once were great and now it's come to this.

I miss those S&M days. But I'm just too old for it now. Also, those cute college girls of several years ago are the ones that turn into the hot MILF's of today!

Seriously, though, some great points. Sloan could be a very good coach even today, but Jerry was just too rooted in the old ways (not guarding the 3, forcing players to the middle, etc.). Need Sloan's tough, no-nonsense style combined with a young basketball mind.

Sloan made D-will so much more effective than he otherwise would have been. Those who couldn't see that drove me nuts.

Yep, Sloan made D-will a lot of money, but of course, D-will would never in a million years be able to admit that even too himself.
 
Yeah me too. He was here for too long that people got blinded by it so that they could not be able to see how awesome it was to have him.

Well is he coaching? No. Jerry turned down those jobs because he doesn't want to coach that badly. I am sure personal decisions were involved with his decision not to move but in the end Jerry was worn out. Being a consultant allows him to remain busy and be involved in the game of BB but I really doubt he would come back to coaching even with the Jazz.
 
Jerry Sloan is the Utah Jazz. They did little prior to him and have done absolutely nothing since he left.

Sloan owns something like 70% of the franchise's total victories. That's absurd. Yeah, he spent a long time coaching here, but that's a pretty damn impressive run.

What does that mean? Hell, I don't know. Either we're going to settle at the bottom of the WC for such a prolonged period of time that no one even bats an eye when there are rumors of the Jazz moving to Seattle or Las Vegas, or another coach comes in and proves this franchise can win beyond Sloan's shadows.

What I do know is that Ty is not that guy.

Ideally, we wouldn't have lost Sloan and he'd be winding down his career this season or next, but the Jazz probably would be far more relevant, decent and stable than they currently are, and that means they could probably bring in a capable, competent coach who doesn't crap the bed and gut the franchise.

Now, though, because things have bottomed out, what coach in their right mind would even want to come here? The Jazz should just promote Sidney Lowe.
