What's new

I need a new car: crowd sourcing JFC for recommendations and warnings

Keep in mind that the V8 in the 4th gen 4runner is the same engine that has been used in the landcruiser for a long time. They will run 300k miles or more no problem and have great power. The AIP is the air induction pump, and only helps emissions. There is a bypass that can be installed if you have issues.

$7900 seems like a decent price for 155k miles.

I went from a 87 jeep grand wagoneer, to a 04 tacoma, and now I'm in a 2010 xterra with the off road package upgrades (skid plates, bilstein shocks, off road roof lights, more ground clearance, rear differential locker, and some other stuff).

I love my X
Back when I only had two kids I had an XTerra and LOVED it. Didn't have the off road package, though.

I have a 2003 4runner. It is my road trip/mountain bike/whitewater adventure rig. I drive it across the country frequently, and drive it to work when I don't have to meet with clients.

I was so impressed with the V8 and overall build quality of my 4runner that I bought a 2016 Lexus GX460 last year. Unfortunately Lexus stopped making them due to CAFE standards, so I am trying to drive it very little and make it last.

I am going to keep my 03 4runner until it dies. With close to 200k miles, the engine runs smoother and more quiet than my wife's 2012 4runner. In all that time, outside of general maintenance and wear items (brake pads, etc.) the only part I have had to replace was a damper motor behind the glove box ($120 part). I also keep up on all the scheduled maintenance.

I have also owned two tacomas, a new gen Tundra, a BMW X5 and a Range Rover sport. The 4th gen 4runner and GX460 are the only ones I really liked, and the X5 was by far the worst.

I may have a line on a pretty dope 1980 Toyota pickup. Most of the truck has been carefully combed through by this cool old car collector guy. It needs interior work, paint, and exhaust stuff. It'd be hard for me to turn down because these have always been my favorite looking toyotas. We'll see. Still gonna look for my diamond-in-the-rough 3rd gen 4runner until he confirms he's ready to sell.

I have to buy a new car in the next couple months. It's for my wife and kids. Thinking about a toyota sienna AWD, or a Benz ML320 diesel. Any thoughts? Gonna go at least 4 years old, I think, unless I find a killer deal.

So, this thread finally paid off. Shout out to b_line and JAZZGASM for the bigly help. I just bought a Lexus GX 470 based on a lot of what you both had been preaching. Gracias.
