I really hate ice bucket challenge

why hate when ALS patients get more donation?

I don't like the ones who are just doing it for fun tho. People tend to advertise by doing that, and that's not cool

I heard that the als has gotten too much money all once and that there is nothing for them to spend the money on.

Also heard that other charities are getting less money because people who would have donated to something else anyways are now just donating to als

Ice bucket challenge.

This is actually a thing. I've been involved in cancer charities for 15 years or so now and one thing they talk about is the giving landscape is limited. The money that goes to charities is limited and they recognize that to increase their own charitable contributions they end up reducing someone else's. Especially when the economy is struggling.

About 5-6K people in the US get ALS each year. Not to say these people are unimportant; but holy cow, there are many, many afflictions that are far more prevalent.

And of course the final irony in all this is that millions and millions more people in this world are without clean drinking water than have ALS. So lets all waste 3 or 4 gallons of cleaner water than most people in Africa will see in their entire lives so you can show everyone what a thoughtful person you are.

So yeah, the bucket thing is mindless self-attention but whatever. It's just another Facebook video that no one will watch. Although these cutesy parents who dump little cups of water on their children need to be punched in the face repeatedly.

There is a funny video where a little British 2 year old does it and she drops the F Bomb on her parents video.

While it is a fad, it is making people that wouldn't have donated to anything to donate to a good cause. Yeah, sure, there are more worthy causes in the world but it is better something than nothing. Give it a break and enjoy the videos.

agree for the most part - but it does seem that ALS seems more common than it once was, and it's hitting younger people. Two friends of mine lost their fathers to ALS in the past 5 years (both men were in their 70's - 80's) and another acquaintance who was just 51 recently passed away after having been diagnosed less than a year ago. The cousin of a close friend of my daughter has it, she's about 34 and I know of two other young people in their 30's who have been diagnosed. One seems to be progressing rather rapidly, the other more slowly...

So I don't know....

My son just did some research on the various ALS charities and the different areas they focus on - plus how much of the funds they raise actually goes to fund programs and how much goes to "overhead" - - research is very important, but so is providing support to those who have the disease and their families.

The young woman (my daughter's friend's cousin) who has it (she was diagnosed a year or so ago) is working with a charity that provides wheelchairs, therapy sessions, respite care and other support services to victims who can't afford them or don't have good enough insurance to pay for these "extras" - I'm trying to find a link...

probably scripted though...

I get pissed hearing kids talk about "Dude have you made ALS?" or "Let's make an ALS video". They don't know jack about the thing's main purpose, but then I ask myself, how educated and self-aware are the people when they are voting and supposedly choosing their future? Let the kids enjoy with/without knowing the deal. Doing something good is better than doing something to hurt someone.

I hate that they are calling it ALS, rather than Lou Gehrig's disease. People shouldn't disrespect The Iron Horse like that.

I wonder how many of these idiots are actually donating. This is attention whoring at it worst. I get that donations are up but according to the activity on my facebook timeline ALS should have 500 trillion dollars!

Water resources are a local issue. Water dumped on someone's head in Utah is not taking away clean drinking water from kids in Africa.

Really easy to be critical of everything, harder to actually be a force to affect positive change.

"Yeah, it's for a good cause, but what they should really be doing is helping the people in Africa. That right there would be perfect. Someone besides me should def do something about those Africans. I cannot help with this cause because I am too busy hypothetically helping with other more worthy causes inside of my brain."

Agreed.

I don't think he claims that though. I too think that it's just not a nice thing to waste clean water while there are countless people dying in need of it.

The real question is, who's gonna help you!

Absolutely. California is in a very bad drought. I'm not really advocating the ice bucket challenge, just pointing out that water supply is a local issue.

OK, just admit you did the Ice Bucket Challenge and put a fagoty little video of it on your Facebook page for all your online friends to see. I'm not trying to make you feel defensive about it, I don't care. And BTW you don't know a thing about me - I do volunteer work, my wife does a ****-ton of volunteer work and being I support her I'm gonna go ahead and take some credit for that as well.
