What's new

If Favors is never the same Favors again...

Also we have this guy named Trey Lyles.

Lyles is better than G-Time at this point in his career. Gordo never would have had a game like Lyles had Friday night his second year - he would have missed a couple shots early and melted the rest of the game.

I'm the original Favors lover on this board - loved him since he was in HS. But I think he's gone when his contract is up. Especially if The Jazz find a way to re-up both GH and GH after this season.

Uhhh Hayward had a 32 point game his rookie.

I have no idea how the cap works. But can the Jazz go into the tax by resigning an UFA that was on the team the previous season? Can't we resign Favs and go into the LT in 2018?

If so, if he has a healthy season and we're in contention, couldn't the argument be made to the Millers that now is the time to enter the LT and go for it?

If so, why not cross that bridge when we get there and get Hill signed up now?

I was listening to a podcast earlier today and they were talking about Brooklyn's plan. Basically Brooklyn is going to throw maxes at every RFA player they can, so expect Exum and/or Hood to receive max contracts from Brooklyn.

Except they will tie up cap space waiting on the offers. You can only Max offer 2 or 3 players (If they zero out almost all of their salary,) then wait 7 days. I suspect teams would make them wait the full period. In the meantime they will be losing other free agents while waiting on the match. Seems like kind of a poor strategy.

So the worry here is that Favors is gonna come back from a bone bruise and never be the same?

Okay.

I'm torn on Favors's future with the team. His presence has definitely been missed, but we're still doing fine on defense with him missing half of the games and playing gimpy the rest. Someone has to be moved down the line, and I healthy or not I still think it needs to be Favors. Lyles may not be the answer, but I don't think spending $20+ Mil on Favors is the right resource allocation.

Good thing none of you are the GM of this team. You want to do a trade. Trade the real fragile on this team, being Burk. And throw in Lyles as well as Mack. There is the cap room to extend Favors. And get back a shooting 4 that plays a little defense and rebounds and your set. You don't trade one of your best players for guys who haven't proved **** yet. Come on! That isn't going to keep Hayward here. That sets the Jazz back at least another 3 years. At least!

What you're talking about is called bird rights, and it relates to going over the cap, not the LT. But yes, you've got the jist of it. Utah has to have room under the cap to extend Hill and Favors, but unless they do some maneuvering, such as moving Burks for a pick or something, they only have room to extend one of them. And honestly, it's pretty iffy that just moving Burks is enough to extend both. Therefore, since Favors is under contract for one more year and Hill expires after this season, it makes more sense to extend Hill now and wait on Favors for his contract to expire.

Now, we really don't know what our cap situation will be for sure by then, but if you assume we will be able to re-sign Hayward, then yes, it's very possible we will go into the tax if we want to and are able to re-sign Favors when his contract expires. If Utah goes deep in the playoffs, I could see the Millers going into the tax short-term, however, there's no doubt we'll still have some tough decisions to make, as I think it's highly unlikely we pay the tax more than 2 years.

I don't think the Millers will ever pay the repeat offender tax that kicks in whenever a team pays the tax in 3 of last 4 seasons. I also don't think they'll go very far into the tax, as the rate increases significantly the farther you go over. 10 million is likely the limit. Hard to predict that 2 years from now, as there will be a new CBA by then and we really don't know exactly where the numbers will fall by then.

Also, keep in mind that Exum and Hill will both have to be paid by then, so even if the Millers are willing to go into the tax, it's still likely we'll have some tough decisions to make. Wouldn't be surprised to see a consolidation trade sometime next year.

Here's a thought... It doesn't directly involve Favors, but it would affect him.

Jazz Trade: Alec Burks and Jeff Withey

Philadelphia Trades: Nerlens Noel and Ersan Ilyasova

Why the sixers do it?

76ers get space for Okafor (who they prefer to Noel) and Embid with a cheap, decent backup (Withey). They pick up a really quality piece on a great contract who has been injured plenty... for what? A player who they may waive and a 1 year rental on a spot they are overloaded at. They haven't been playing Ersan much at all. 76ers get something for very little risk. They are swapping a crowded position and a player they don't plan to resign for an affordable asset who is risky due to injuries. They can afford to take a swing on Burks who if healthy may be their best player in 2017.

Why the Jazz do it?

Jazz rent Noel, clear cap space to be able to resign Hayward and Hill next year, and don't drop off defense while Favors is hurt. Favors becomes more expendable if we resign Noel instead of Favors. Favors has pressure to get healthy and perform. Ersan is a vet, helps us stretch the floor, and better now off the bench than Burks has been all season. We are basically moving on from the off injured Burks for financial flexibility, additional depth now for 2016, and flexiblity regarding Favor's situation. At the least having Noel is a bargaining chip in extending Favors.

No one has shot this one down. I suppose it makes a bit of sense to ya'll as much as it did to me?

Okay.

I think the concern is the IT band issue and his recurring back problems. These can be very serious, especially since he was obviously hampered by them before the bruise showed up.

I hope all parties involved are working overtime to figure out the root cause of all of this and are trying to remedy it in the downtime. Seems to me that there's been a lot of bad training and bad posture.

Defensively speaking, we seem to be coping with the loss of Favors just fine. And, seeing that we are under the cap by something like $13m, it's way too soon to dump Burks for cap space. If he comes back in good shape, then he could have a big 2017 and be worth much more than a salary dump.

I don't like your trade proposal at all.

In the event they move on from Favors in the summer of 2018. That means they can go after an athletic shotblocking PF in the 2017 draft and groom him 1 year to platoon with Trey Lyles.

Robert Williams is seemingly an excellent candidate for that role. Check out my latest post in the draftees thread for some recent buzz on him. The article all the way at the bottom has a bunch of in-game footage.

I'd trade Burks for Noel in .1 seconds.

You want the guy who opted to have surgery on his knee so he wouldnt have to play basketball because he didnt want to be a backup? He would throw the same hissy fit in Utah.

And LOL @ Brooklyn maxing Exum or Hood. Have fun with those medicore years doing that
