If hayward averaged 24 points?

You guys are right...I wasn't paying close attention to the boxscores, my bad. Yes, i would say he could be turning the corner. Three solid games in a row, including one phenomenal game, I'm hoping this is not a short term thing...

It seems like when he is good, it is usually a stretch of at least 5-10 games, and then he will have 5 or so subpar ones. The encouraging thing to me is that he usually has longer good stretches than the bad ones, and he usually does not have any bad stretches to end the season (aside from his lone playoff appearance)

Hayward is frustrating in that regard. He definitely has his slumps. But when he is on he looks like a top 20-30 player. And then he goes and had a night like last night (he played like a top 5 player) and teases you to think he could be even more. Consistency and confidence going forward are it'll take to swoon me into the Hayward camp for good.

I'm not a big fan of opponent PER but it is worth noting Hayward is holding his opponents to 13.9 (at SG) and 13.1 (at SF). Pretty nice job defensively for not having great physical tools.

In January (3 games - v. Bucks, @ Lakers, v. Thunder) he is averaging 27ppg, 5.7 rpg, 5 apg, 2 spg and 1 bpg in 39 mpg. He is shooting 60% fg, 64% from 3 and 89% from the FT line. He has only 2.3 TOs pg and 1.3 fouls per game.

To take this further:

In his last ten games, he's averaging 17.7/5.7/5.8, 1.4 bpg and 1.4 spg in 35.5 minutes while shooting 44.6% overall.

In his last 5 games, he's averaging 19.8/4.6/5.4, 1.2 bpg and 1.6 spg in 35.2 minutes while shooting 50.7% overall.

Obviously these are small sample sizes, but he's clearly becoming more comfortable with his role. If you look at every month, he's progressed in his shooting like this:

October: 30.8% (only 1 game)
November: 38.7% (17 games)
December: 41.3% (16 games)
January: 60.4% (3 games)

Clearly January is an aberration so far, but as the optimist I am, I think it's a sign of better things to come. Will he keep on shooting 60%? Highly unlikely. Will he shoot below 40% again? I do not believe so.

Another point I'd like to make, Hayward is clearly a key player on this team. Just look at this stats when we win:

20.8/6.3/5.5 while shooting 49%.

Those are all-star numbers. Unfortunately his stats when we lose are horrific. Averaging a little over 15 points while shooting 37% if I remember right.

I honestly feel that if our team talent increases, that Hayward can be a guy who alternates between a #1 and #2 option.

I agree.
Don't understand what the urgency is to get rid of Hayward.
DL has made great roster and payroll moves last two years.
Not worried he will overpay Hayward.
He did not panic and do it before the deadline.
Hayward will look even better with a franchise player if the Jazz can pull it off.

It seems to me that a lot of people have said that Hayward will never be good enough to be a first or second option. I hope he keeps this play up.

....with his outside shot.....Hayward couldn't average 24 points in a closed gym with no one guarding him!

Need to specify the time frame. Pretty sure he could if you gave him a week or so.

There is a reason there are now so many threads about Hayward...what he did was very unusual for him. That is enough to call for caution. In Malone's hey-day, would we have generated a ton of threads when he scored 35 pts or so, when he was averaging 30+ already?

I don't think Hayward needs to average 24 pts to convince people that he should be given a 10M to max contract.
He just needs to be average around 50% FG shooting with > 40% 3FG this year and continue to consistently get those rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.

I heard Locke say on one of his podcasts that Hayward's shooting percentages go up like 5% per month each season. (Not cumulative, but per month stats) I thought he said something like his April shooting %'s are like above 55%.

Considering nobody in the NBA is actually averaging 30 PPG right now, I don't see the problem with it. Also, Malone averaged over 30 once in his career. Lets not act like it was all that common for even him.

In essence, Hayward had a very good game. Bugger off.

Oooh how about White Jesus? That would be cool, and the irony to have a white Jesus. Classic.

Or what about "Haley's Comet" because he doesn't show up often but when he does it's a thing of beauty?
