If Jazz went 19-10 w/Dante starting and held opponents to 89ppg,why the doubt in Exum

We understand the ACL tear but he's only 20 yrs old and by all accounts is expected to be 100% and is looking more physically healthy.Dante went straight from Australian high school to the NBA.He never was around the NBA before then was playing in it.Yet with all that lack of experience he excelled on the defensive side of the court and Jazz started winning by defense.

Yet some Jazz fans want him learning behind a more "experienced PG",looking like the 19-10 record with Exum starting is not believable or never happened.Jazz haven't come close to matching the defense or the Wins since.....Making the Question ,Do Wins count.

Because the front office and his team mates stand firmly behind Exum in thinking they do.

Those are gaudy numbers. Do you happen to know the W-L percentage of the opponents?
 
Dude was 46th among point guards in Real Plus-Minus last season, was a complete zero on offense, and just had major knee surgery.

This. I want the best for the guy, I hope he can really up his game. His defense seems to have been his strong suit. He never drove the ball, got to the line, and was a middling shooter as far as I recall. It remains to be seen what his injury will do to him over the long-term when it comes to durability, but also psychologically, as he was already reluctant to drive.
 
I just cant dismiss the ACL. Theyre all different and we all saw what it did to D-Rose. Im hoping this tear is one of the nicer ones he can bounce back from. Dante relies on his explosion. Hes one of those 100% speed guys a la Westbrook, Rose, Wall. If he were a 70% guy with unreal skill like curry, stockton, and nash i may be less concerned. Although u could say those guys had less margin of error. I dunno, Baron Davis bounced back.

In the spirit of the 'how good will Dante be?' thread, i think Dantes recovery will be a slightly better one than Baron Davis.
 
It's not doubt at all. It's about how to best benefit Exum and the Jazz in the short and long term. He'd gain valuable experience being under some other PGs for a year. He's very young and a defensive stud.

It's not a bad idea at all. But if it doesn't happen the Jazz are instantly upgraded at the point just from having Exum back.

False premise.

Great thread. Been saying these things for a while. It's not like we are winning a chip in the next 3 years, so I see no point in getting some stop gap pg. let the young gun learn from the get go. Let him learn as a leader now and gain the respect of his team.
 
Given his injury and the fact that he will likely not be 100% in his first year back, I like the idea of a good vet presence. However, I also think that with Shelvin Mack, we already have enough there to not go needlessly sign someone else.

My thoughts on next season would be to allow Mack to remain the starter with Dante slowly rounding in to shape with less of the workload overall. That way he can get back fully and when the time is right, take the reigns back over from Mack. If that is at some point next season, great, but otherwise just let him be the backup for the year. He'll still get plenty of time and development under this scenario without stressing his ability to come back 100% immediately.

After a year and a half away from playing NBA basketball? Yeah, I don't think he will be 100% from day 1.

Before his rookie season he spent time away from the floor when he skipped college and he had stamina issues. I suspect he will again when this season starts. I think it will take a few months for him to get back into NBA form.

What PG will sign here for year that would be a GOOD PG for Exum to learn under? That's right...no one.

As a result of seven months in the weight room, Utah's point guard looks more equipped than ever to drive the lane and take contact on his way to the basket. Nothing is official, of course, but he looks like he's grown a bit past the 6-foot-6 mark.

You mean 19 Wins to 10 Losses ....they are since the Jazz haven't come close to matching or playing that good since.

You do know he was 19 years old fresh out of Australian high school.Post comparisons to other 19 year old starting PG's in the NBA ,past and present.

I think he just missed this past season ,where did the other 1/2 season come from. And by accounts he's a little taller and gained 10 lbs ,that would put him at 205# and spent a season on the sidelines watching & learning .His knee was injured but his brain was still very actively learning his craft.

What was his RPM over last 29 games? Probably the more relevant statistic since we all saw his early year struggles to adjust.
 
The Jazz need to stop wasting the PG position on undersized players that are not incredible dishers and short unathletic guys who shoot first and rarely play D.

I say, invest on Exum and Lyles. With Rudy protecting the rim, keep stuffing the wings.

Don't think that stat exists -- even if it did, it wouldn't be particularly meaningful over a 30 game sample. His other stats didn't improve as the season progressed. It's entirely possible the Jazz played better in spite of Exum, not because of him. While he may have been an upgrade over Trey, last season's performance is not a good reason to expect Dante to be a passable starting PG. He wasn't good.

A year and a half not a season and a half. April 2015 to October 2016 is a year and a half. I realize that he played some summer league and international ball and that he may play a little this summer but it's still not NBA ball. To expect Exum to be 100% either mentally or physically after that kind of hiatus is imv ridiculous.
