If NY amnestied Billups - do we want him??

Tyson Chandler deal will be done today, w/Billups amnestied, according to source. Not clear where Turiaf going yet, but he'll be traded.

My reasons for bidding for him:
- With all our youngins this season - why not get an experienced PG to run the team?
- He'll also teach all our youngins about professionalism, competitiveness, craftiness
- He has Championship pedigree
- He can hit that occasional 3pt when called upon
- If we start him alongside Burks at SG and Hayward at SF - we have enough young legs / quickness there to make up for his slowness, etc.
- Improvement over Harris: Can run the team. Cool head. Can hit open shots.
- Improvement over Watson: Can hit open shots.
- Improvement over Price: Everything except Price can dunk.

I'm not saying he's our future PG, but until we find one in the draft - why not go with him in the meantime and pass the reign over at the appropriate time?

Thoughts?
 
Certainly better than Harris, who's only a short-term option as well. So trade him, though don't know the financial ramifications regarding amnesty.
 
No. I would not want to go through the trouble of bringing him here if he does not want to be here. All those "intangibles" kind of become null in void if he is pissed off all the time. MAYBE BURKS CAN RECRUIT HIM THOUGH!
 
I would be for it except that I don't think Billups would come here. He's ****ing pissed and last I heard he was contacting suitors or something so he had some control.

Dude's old, a good guy, and had a rough couple of years. I don't blame him.

That and/or a trade where the Jazz shed salary either with that extra 40% or 50% or whatever is now for teams above the cap, or a trade to a team under the cap (Jefferson for one or some of George, Collison, Hibbert, and/or Rush).

He has to clear the equivalent of the waiver wire before he can really dictate anything, no?

Technically, but why would anyone really want to go through the trouble of trying to get an old PG to come to your team? I'm guessing Billups would be OK with any of the top contending teams picking him up.

Sort of. Players always kind of have the option of just refusing to show up, unfortunately.

In which case, I wonder if the Jazz could pick him up and then trade him?

I have been feeling the same way. I have been trying to explain why this would be a great idea to my fellow co-workers and they cannot see it. I would only add one more thing to this great list, Billups and Burks already have a strong connection. They have spent a lot of time this off season working out together. It might just be what this team needs. Ideally I see the Jazz moving Harris and one big man before the trade deadline.
 
I don't think anyone here is arguing that Billups would not be helpful under the ideal condition that he actually wants to be here. Billups seems like a pretty competitive dude though who probably wants to compete for another ring. I think the only place he would accept to go other than the top flight teams is Denver, because it's his hometown.

Definitely. And I'm sure he's sick as **** of being moved around against his will for having done everything right.

Good point - why not sell Billups on mentoring Burks and making him into an All Star (which I think he has all the potential to be)?

- Billups has already won a Championship the last time I check - does he need another one?
- He was touted as going back to Denver his hometown and saving the Nuggets' future at one point - but they traded him away.

So.. what else is there for him to accomplish? Why not sell him on mentoring the next All Star coming out of Colorado???

I don't think playing for the rebuilding Utah Jazz was the way he envisioned his career ending.

As a person who likes to create positive spins, I do appreciate your effort in creating an alternate reality.
