If we don't sign Hill (cap question)

In
Favors is part of the reason we have a good defense this season. He has played most of the games this season. Our 2 most used 5 man lineups include him. In our 2 man lineups our defense rating is better when Gobert plays with Favors than Diaw, Lyle's or JJ. He also adds a lot of value to our defense as the backup center. Our defense would be worse this season if we didn't have Favors even on one leg.
Not really contending that he's a good player or good defender, but if you can get a player that can actually play games, has the same positional versatility, is arguably a better defender, and inarguably a better floor-spacer?

Im just saying Favors has played more minutes this season than JJ, Lyle's or Diaw. Without him we would not be the top defense.

As far as as Ibaka goes healthy Favors is a better player all around. If Favors isn't healthy next season then we should look into replacing him then but we can't afford to replace him with a max or near max contact without giving up too many other players. I would rather bring in someone for much cheaper as insurance for Favors next year and hope he gets back to full health. Even if we just want to trade him it's worth waiting to see if he gets back healthy.

Next season Favors will be able to play games. He doesn't have a genetic "can't play games" defect. He's injured. I really want a Jazz team with Gobert and Favors commanding the best defense the NBA has ever seen. I'd get a boner watching that. Call me boner-selfish.

Meanwhile, we'd watch a recovered Favors PLAYING GAMES for another team and killing it.

Favors is a very good NBA player. We trade him low and we will regret it.

If we can get Favors healthy we can keep the #1 defense in the NBA right here for many years to come. That's not worth anything to you guys? Seriously?

I get the frustration. But put your emotions aside and look at the player we have. We're not going to get equal value in return.

If we retain Favs for years to come we don't bring back Hill... who is important to our defense... and likely can't pay one of Hood or Exum. It's about allocation of cap resources. It also an issue that Favs and Gobert will not be able to play well together in certain matchups. I think we might actually be better with a guy like Covington at the four. Good perimeter defender... adequate rebounder and would help/not hurt our spacing.

I just think long term the favors Gobert pairing would put a lower ceiling on what we could become.

Fair assessment.

I agree. We are seeing his value right now. Without him we are very hit or miss. We miss his steady play in our interior defense.
