What's new

If we lose to Charlotte tonight...

What's really exciting about our core 4 is that they are an ELITE defensive group. It's been so long since the Jazz have had an elite defense - I almost find that more fun to watch than an elite offense.

The C4 could be a team that plays great defense, is great at rebounding, and great at getting to the FT line. When you win the rebounding and FT battle each night, you're always going to have a chance to win. Add in the fact that they can all create their own shot, and are showing improving ability to create for others...man, this group could be really special.

This game looked to be the game I looked the least forward to, and I watch them all. Until I found out both Al and Sap were injured. Then it became interesting.

And Kanter did not disappoint in the least. What's depressing is knowing he'll be put in his "rightful" place once Al and Sap get back.

Burks looks like he could be pretty dang good at the pnr. The kid has worked on his shot, his ball handling looks better from just two weeks ago, and his passes are pretty good. Loved watching that game! It's staying on the DVR for off season boredom.

Great idea!
Last year i saved the win we had at the lakers when burks and kanter each scored 17 pts (13 of burks pts came in the 4th and he did well guarding kobe) and i watched that game about 10 times over the summer.

Most fun game of the year to watch. Just awesome.
.
Anybody else get the feelin watching that game that if our starters had played we would have struggled to win? The defense our young bigs played completely took their shooters out of the game from the start.
.
Really impressed with the defense of our young guys. Very impressed with Evans. Still can't catch or dribble. But at least he showed a 10 foot jumper and a little defensive ability, besides weak side blocks.
.
Kanter was unbelievable. Favors struggled a bit but the defense in this game proved that he belongs. He changed and caused misses on numerous shots that Millsap and Jefferson would have just conceded.
.
More excited for our future than I have been before. I know it was against Charlotte. But a lot of people believed we would be Charlotte without Millsap and Jefferson.

FIxed

there is no quesiton about it. if the starters play it might have been a win. but not an easy win. 10 point win max.

I was wondering what the avg win margin is without big al

I like this. Burks has great court awarness. His timing is still a little off, seems like he rushes or panicks sometimes but I notice that he sees his teamates and knows when they are open, but unlike most players I think he anticipates where there are going to be. He throws a pass before the guy is open.

I'm not ready to say the C4 are an ELITE defensive group. Yes, they "held" Charlotte to 68 points. Remember, this is the WORST offensive team in the NBA. Charlotte missed a ton of open shots, including some easy layups. They also got a few easy baskets underneath when the Jazz blew defensive assignments or flat out fell asleep. I guess you can say they're elite compared to the usual starting 5.

Overall, I was impressed. And most surprised not by Kanter or DeMarre, but by Evans. Jeremy had a nice game. I could definitely see him moving up to the 10th/11th man, getting more mins. No doubt in my mind the Jazz should aggressively pursue a reasonably-priced 3rd big, whether by trade or in free agency. Then use one of their picks on another young PF/C - and in the process say goodbye to Paul and Al. This is like the Dantley/Malone problem (or Stockton/Green). Not saying Favors or Kanter are anywhere near the level of Karl and John, but there are veterans in the way that need to be removed so the young guys can play.

Agree. I have no problem with Burks being the backup PG. Hopefully we'll see some of that when Mo returns. Corbin playing Alec over Watson and then benching Tinsley is encouraging. I don't think Ty feels the need to give either of those guys significant PT. But we'll see.

Now all we need is for DeMarre to start over Marvin.

Favors, Kanter, Mo, DeMarre and Foye. With Hawyard, Burks and Marvin off the bench.

Agree. It's better then watching this team try to outscore the other team, while not getting any stops on defense. This is exactly what kept us from being a true contender during the D-Will Boozer days. They would have to score on every possession just to keep pace. Les say both Sap an Al are gone. This team only needs to be average offensively. A lineup of Mo, Hayward, Carroll, Kanter, and Favors should be very good defensively.

With all due respect, I must disagree. Charlotte may be the worst offensive team in the NBA, but this was still their worst offensive performance of the season and 23 points below their average. That means something.

They did all this without having the bench the bench that Al and Millsap have the luxury of having.

I think that is note worthy.

How would the game go if Kanter and Favors were backing up Kanter and Favors?

It may be a bad team. But its stilll an NBA team. These are the games that the vets always find a way to lose.

I'd just throw one thing out there. The Jazz turned the ball over 22 times. That means they lost out on 22 possessions. That means that the Bobcats played at least average defense and yet they couldn't capitalize on those TO's. The Bobcats only scored 68 points. That tells he how good the defense was.

If the Jazz could have cut the TO's back to their average (just under 16) that means they could have score about another 6 points making this game an even bigger blowout.

I'm not ready to call it an elite defense yet but they were certainly elite on Friday night. There are more positives to be taken from that game then I initially realized.

Defense wins titles. This is why BigAl is good for those teams that want to become average.

A team lead by BigAl can have zero TO, a perfect game and still may lose the game.
