If you were 7'2" with Rudy Gobert wingspan would you be a NBA quality player?

0.07% of American men between 6'6" and 6"8" are in the NBA. Even having this really tall height you have a tiny percent chance of being in the NBA. It is that hard.

However, this changes when you are above 7'0" in height. Out of all American men between the age 20 and 40 a whopping 17% are part of the NBA. That is how rare and desirable it is to be this height (Also keep in mind this doesn't factor in how many of the 83% of 7 footers didn't even try to be an NBA player).

This brings up the question, if you were born with Ruby Gobert's height and build do you think you would be part of that 17%? Of course you would have realized your height relatively early on in life and had most of your life to develop your basketball skills. Me personally, I think that I am not so sure, being 7'0" isn't a guarantee or anything.

One of my best friends is 5'10" and was forced to play power forward in high school. He averaged 8 rebounds a game in high school while still being the best shooter on the team. His coach told him that if he was 6'4" he would have a D-1 scholarship. If he was 7'0" tall I have little doubt he would be in the NBA right now.

Basketball being so height dependent makes me have a little bit of bitterness about it and prevents me from enjoying it as much as I would want to. In soccer one of the top two best players in the world is 5'7" (Messi). Zlatan Ibrahimović is 6'5" and is one of the top 5 best in the world. This height range fits like 80% of mens height in the world (I made up this stat). Similar to NFL in which 5'8" you can still be a great running back and 6'10" you can be a great OT.

I realize that in the NBA there are exceptions like Muggsy etc being really short and Barkley being short for position but it is realllly rare. Also I realize that in the NFL and soccer you also require elite genetic gifts besides height but it seems much less dependent and more overcomeable.

I'm a pretty good basketball player. So given the percentage of 7'+ people who play in the NBA, I fully expect that I would have.

Rudy is a freak. I think even if there are other people with his height and wingspan, the chances of them being as mobile are infinitesimal.

But you don't have to be Rudy. I'd have to think that being his height and wingspan would give one a better chance than most. Work on your skills as much as the next dude and you are more likely to make it than a 6'0'' - 7'0'' dude imo.

I would be a Hall of Famer.

Assuming I had the same athleticism and coordination that I have now.

But being bigger is different. You have different challenges. You aren't as fluid as smaller people. It's hard to say what it would be like to be tall.

If I was rudy size with my shooting ability then I would be a yearly all star no doubt.

But like hack said, if I were rudy size I probably wouldn't be able to shoot as good as I can at my current size

Yes, most people who are over 6'6 have trouble moving without being super awkward.

The mental competent of being a NBA player is hardly a given. If that's not part of the deal, that would be something to think about. It's not just considering your skillset and physical ability and putting it in Rudy's frame.

Played JUCO as a 6'2" PG so yeah I'd like to think and extra foot would have made the difference.

If I were 7'6" I think I'd be about as good as Shawn Bradley was. (I'm talking about when we were both about 21.) By that I mean I'm fairly coordinated, have fairly quick reflexes, was always in the upper 25% when kids were choosing other kids for teams "back in the day" (but never the first one chosen), and at one point in my life I could hit free throws... but I have nowhere near the athletic or pure shooting ability of most NBA players.

As it is, I'm 5'9". On a good day. Picture a 5'9" Shawn Bradley of his current age, and that's about what it would be like if I were to step on the court these days. :-)

I would absolutely be a lock for NBA All-Star lol. Can pass ( PG is my primary position), very quick, great timing and anticipation, around 80% FT shooting.... man if I could dunk with volleyball at 6 ft than given 7'2 size and 7'9 wingspan I would be a total monster:)

I would have tons of talent and length to become the GOAT.. but would probably just sign a fat contract and hit the couch and cheetos and ride it out.
