What's new

I'm gonna be in SLC for nearly one month...

I haven't visited for longer than 4 days in over 6 years. So, I'm gonna need the scoop on what's going on, where that stuff goes on, etc. My family and I get along just fine, but I gotta find an outlet. I still have a pulse on the music scene there, but I could use more info there, and I need news on any other indoor activity worth the effort (got the outdoors covered). I would love to meet up with some of yall for some bball if that's going on...

Thanks. Will rep.

Passing thru the stg on Wednesday BTW

Party @ PKMoes. I'll be there-- I'm the guy with the Jeremy Bentham mask on.

Well everything exciting in SLC is actually happening 518 miles to the west, to be honest with you. I heard that people like to walk around that one outside mall thing near the freeway. Also, there is Crown Burger, and you could spend literally hours sampling all of the different fry sauces Utah has to offer. You could get drunk on nyquil like the mormons do, or 11 gallons of that Utah beer, unless GF can hook you up with the real thing from his bathtub. There is also that one park where you can get meth, although I doubt it is heisenberg-level quality. Have fun!!

Are you lecturing? I want to attend every one. 30 days of bliss tbtmzwichootbh.

I want to bring babe to one to harass you too. #goodtimes2013inourhologramportionoftheuniverse

Not lecturing. In fact, I was gonna start a thread about this a few weeks ago, but I'm leaving academia. I'm grading my last stack of papers right now. Got a job in journalism.

I know you and babe are the same dood. I'll stage a lecture just to see your multiple-personality performance thouh.

I made my decision the same week and for many of the same reasons as this guy: https://zacharyernst.blogspot.com/2013/10/why-i-jumped-out-of-ivory-tower.html?m=1

Worth the read.

The short version:
1. It's maddening how hard it is to be innovative in academia. With research and with teaching.
2. This is basically the same point, but bears repeating from this angle: the number of acfeptable methods are frighteningly small. In other words, you often cant even make it to innovative goals without a lot of sourpusses questioning your desires. Exhausting.
3. the time lapse from project inception to project completion is maddeningly long. I gotta get in a zone where people churn **** out.
4. It's frightening how little people actually collaborate in my field.

Full disclosure: this guy was probably five years further along than me. I wasn't tenured, and haven't churned out the publications... I was just getting to that precipice when I decided to leave.

In that case I'll bring my trout personality along to kick your ***.

Speaking of Trout:

NAOS, Trout texted me to tell you that he's in the STG this week, and he'd love to meet you tomorrow.

"Mind responding to that for me? "Of course it doesn't. Of all the **** talking tools to ever grace this site, you are the biggest ***** out of all of them. Hell, even craig1221 had the stones to meet up for lunch. Good day sir!""
