If he had just a bit more nasty to his game he'd be one of my favorite players ever for the Jazz.

I still have some blind hope he can be.

So you would put his name up there with names like, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Jeff Hornacek, Adrian Dantley, Mark Eaton, Darrell Griffith, Thurl Bailey, Pete Maravich??? It's within $1M over the first three years. Hayward is likely to opt out after the third year as he can then sign up to a 5/30% deal .

You think someone's going to give him a 5/30% max deal after seeing him play for another three years? No way in heck. That would start upwards of $20 million per year, probably considerably upwards if the tv revenue increases the way that's expected, and would be worth well more than $100 million total. I know free agents are getting crazy money this off season but that would be beyond crazy.

Now, that's a bargain. His contract was a success. If you wanted to trade him now, you'd find suitors pretty fast.

Sign Hayward at $16/year, you have to pay him for 4 years because no one will want to trade that contract except some boneheaded GMs/owners.
Paying a player twice he deserves is never good for building a team spirit either.

Taking a fair contract early to stay hear and now practicing with the summer league team...... showing up to the scrimmage (no burks, evan, kanter, etc)..... signing autographs..... building a foundation with coach snyder.


I even wore my favors jersey to the scrimmage tonight instead of my burks one cause i was grateful for him signing that deal last year

Most players say "all the right things" about how they love it wherever they are and want to spend the rest of their careers there. Most players are of course full of crap and are out to drain every dollar from the highest bidder. I certainly don't begrudge them for that but on the other hand it's nice to hear someone say "all the right things" and actually mean them.

And Favors is going to be all of 26 when this contract expires - he'll more than get his.

Why would his shooting numbers improve joining a team that has a large majority of its offense being ran through an elite center and shooting guard with proven talent?? They are not going to cut out a section of their offensive sets to run the ball through a guy who averaged 16.5 ppg on a Utah Jazz team that won less than 30 games. Why would you even think that??

If I were GM for the Jazz, my #1 goal would be to improve. I would take risks by giving larger contracts to players I feel can help the team improve long-term. While Hayward is getting overpaid, i would risk it. With Favors, I feel like his lack of fire has limited his upside. I would only max Favors if I knew I could trade him. I like the guy, and hopefully Snyder can get more from him, but I have not been impressed with his growth since we acquired him.

But that same thing doesn't limit Gordon? I'd personally say Gordon's personality flaw is more glaring than Favors lack of fire (which I agree with), which is Gordo's pouty demeanor and lack of killer instinct.

All the reasons he's valuable - not just on the court. Loyalty is HUGE with us. Hard to find players like him, who play hard, work hard, and are loyal to boot, showing us they want to be here. Pretty cool. Can't wait to see how he performs under a new coaching staff, too.

He already lived up to expectations last season. Outperforming it is franklin guaranteed.

His field goal % improved to a respectable rate despite his shooting troubles at times and a poor offensive build. He's a hard worker and will improve. Hero Favors, Maneesh.

Parsons was also a third option with the best center and best SG drawing attention. Don't get me wrong I like Parsons but it is a huge difference being a first option playing half the season without any good playmaker vs playing with two stars.

I would also like to point out the fact that Gordy is a much better defender.

He went into this summer not being a max player, either, right? I mean, maybe he was worth $8-10M and a team might offer $12M, which the Jazz would reluctantly have to match. But Hayward is certainly not a max player. Who would ever pay that for a guy shooting <40%/30%; are you crazy?

Hayward may not be worthy of the 5/30% contract, but if he's in the 18/5/5 range with a decent shooting percentage someone will probably give it to him.

Pretty much this. Seems he's happy here, productive, and Coach Q has probably taken a shine to him. I get the sneaking suspicion he's going to have a monster year next year.
