The best thing about the salt palace was that after the first quarter you could pretty much get in free if you were under 12. Well unless it was the lakers or celtics. Me and my buddies saw a lot of games that way.
They came after the Angels and Gulls.
But I resent being called an old fogey. That's my father. I still remember the red and white plaid, seer-sucker suit he used to wear on business trips.
Angels were the original name of the franchise since they were affiliated with the California Angels. They remained the AAA team of the Angels through 1981, but were renamed the Gulls in 1975. I don't remember what prompted the name change...perhaps an ownership change? Or maybe the team was having problems with their Angels' affiliation at the time and was considering a switch. I moved from SLC in 1976 and kept up with the Gulls for a couple of years after that. Before the days of the Gorenet, of course, so my dad used to mail me game clippings from the DNews once a week.I used to LOVE going to see Golden Eagle games at the Salt Palace..was awesome..I must have missed the Angels, because I remember listening to Gulls games while shooting hoops in the driveway in the summer during the '79-'82 time frame I think. Moved to SLC in '79.
Hey, don't even get me started on my memories of the Salt Lake Golden Eagles...
Or the Salt Lake Angels who later became the Gulls.
What about the Salt Lake Trappers?

I'm sorry MoTown. I thought the "cool" would offset the "old fogey" part.

I had this one on cassette, with Keep On Fighting on one side (the Jazz won several come-from-behind games early that season) and Keep It Sexy on the other.
And yes, I said cassette, which I assume puts me in the old-fogey gang.
Haha... I remember having Beach Boys on cassette. I loved the Beach Boys as a kid. I still get teased by family for that one, but that's still not as bad as my Bro listening to Vanilla Ice and New Kids On The Block....
Hey, I'll do you one better. I was FURIOUS when my older brother gave away his 8-track player and tapes. He knew I wanted them, but apparently was mad at me at the time.Haha... I witnessed the Utah Stars in the Salt Palace in their CHAMPIONSHIP season. Saw so many great and entertaining players in the Stars' 5+ years in Salt Lake, with such colorful names: Dr J., The Iceman, The A Train, Skywalker, etc. and of course, "The Booner." Also saw a skinny rookie for the Utah Stars who was the first player to make the jump from HS to the pros. Remember looking at my father, who was a sportswriter back then, and both of us saying that Moses Malone was going to be a heck of a player. I wore out my red, white and blue ball shooting 3's from the lawn and way deep in the driveway. And I remember how heartbroken I was when the Stars folded. A piece of my childhood ended when the franchise folded in 1975.
Salt Lake went from unaffiliated rookie team to AAA.
Holy **** is right. That pornstache Scott was sporting was AWESOME!

My grandfather would give me tickets every year for my birthday to a Golden Eagles game. It always happened to be the annual bikini night. Good times.
By the way, has KSL/local media ever had an original idea that wasn't some half-assed rip-off of whatever was popular in movies or tv at the time?
