Installing a culture first

Another thread was asking when is Quinn going to install an offense. I'm watching San Antonio right now, and I forgot that they got David West in addition to LaMarcus Aldridge. Why? Because the Spurs win. Because players want to play for Popovich. Because they know they'll get the ball and a good rest every now and then.

In the era of the CBA/Max contracts, when the money is equal, teams like San Antonio, Milwaukee, Utah, Memphis, and so on, got to differentiate with something. Miami and LA and Atlanta and Chicago, and New York can compete on hos and sweet city life. But other teams need something.

Spurs management has established something special and it's what Dennis Lindsey and Quinn Snyder are trying to do. That's why they shipped out Kanter's sorry ***. That's why it's all about "not skipping steps" and doing it the right way. If the Jazz pull this off, then players like Aldridge and West will flock to play for Quinn and the Jazz and the best fans in the NBA.

I'm more interested in how quickly Quinn and Lindsey can install a bulletproof culture here.

InB4: "Spurs copied the Jazz first"
InB4: "Spurs tanked twice and got David Robinson and then Tim Duncan"
InB4: "Jazz should have drafted Parker or Ginobili or Kawhi Leonard"

You may be asking for too much. We need winning and culture may be a luxury

You forgot they added Aldridge and West? Maybe you just have a bad memory.

Didn't forget they added Aldridge, just saw West and thought, "oh yeah they got West, too."

Also got touched on scout camp, so I do have a bad memory. And a bad memory.

How about that, "the spurs has some veterans that are on life support and are carried by new players like the vampires they are"

This is a young team, with an injured starting PG. since their over .500 its easy to lose that context.

The Spurs also have a player who's always won, The Spurs won 36 more games with Duncan his rookie season. He's never been on a below .500 team, Tim Duncan is most certainly an anomaly, and it's not realistic to try and replicate his successes.

Not sure if Culture is the word, but the Jazz have established they will be playing big, defending the rim, rebounding and try to stay turnover free - to give the defense it's best chance to work. I doubt that changes anytime soon, hopefully not.

If they overturn the roster by slowly getting rid of the vets and handing their minutes to young talent, then replacing those vets roster spots with more young talent to develop down the line, the team can hover near an average age of 25 for some time, maybe even til 2020..

There's still a cycle of trial and error going on, one might even liken it to bulking and cutting.

The Pop-Duncan Spurs are an anomaly in the history of the league. The league has either had teams that were very good for a long time but never quite made it (Jazz...), teams that perfectly exploited a short window in time (The 94/95 Rockets come to mind, the bad boys) or teams that were dominant for closeish to a decade and won several titles (the 80s Lakers and Celtics, the 90s Bulls, the Shaq/Kobe Lakers).

But the Pop-Duncan combo of a team consistently fighting for a title for 17 years running winning titles 15 years apart, never doing a back to back, alternating wins / setbacks / Heartbreaks (That Fisher shot, that Ray Allen shot) etc for so long is just something that one cannot fathom.

I mean the 60s Celtics or the 90's Bulls are more "normal", more predictable, than what the Spurs have done.

They can be used as an example of many things done right, sure, but they are not a template because what they have done in unduplicable.

If our coach is such a savior, and you're going to go all fanboy for him, then maybe you should learn how to spell his name?

I was watching the Spurs last night. Wow, do they move the ball. It's almost one touch pass after another, which is why they get so many good looks for 3's. The Warriors also move the ball well, but nothing like the Spurs. This is something we need to work on; we do so much more Iso, but then we don't have the shooters that those teams have.

That one is actually a legit response. The Spurs did copy the Jazz. Now we have come full circle and it is the Jazz's turn to copy the Spurs.

I agree that Snyder and Lindsey are building a culture and that may have played into their decision to not bring in any free agents. Only player on the team they didn't have last year (including owning their rights) is Withey and he never sees the floor. Jazz are building a foundation of chemistry, effort, fight and D.

I am highly encouraged by the Jazz and think that they will surprise people by seasons end.

The culture's been changed. It's here. Now, as Peeks said, we just need to win. Then it will be cultivated and grow.
