This is satire. Whether its funny is completely relative. I laughed at it because its over the top stupid. If I go back and read it again I laugh again because its still incredibly stupid. I probably have a low IQ because I laugh at stupid things like this, Will Ferrel movies and some posts on this forum.

This is not intended to offend anyone. I dont even know why someone would be offended unless they had a close relative that was killed by a Utah Jazz member. But if it does then I am sorry.
 
Wow, normally the Onion writers are a lot better than this. I didn't find it offensive (but I'm not an LDS). Just terribly unfunny.
 
I'm of the LDS faith and I wasn't offended by the article. I found it so incredibly stupid that it's not worth my time to be offended by it.

Or substitute "Harlem Globetrotters" for "Utah Jazz" and "Kill whitey!" for "Kill the mormons". Same with the Utah Jazz "Gone Fishin'" graphics. They think it's funny to include a reference to plural marriage. For some reason they think it's okay to be disrespectful to the LDS, yet they are being just as bigoted as if they had a black player eating fried chicken and watermelon, because we all know "stereotypes are funny because they're true". It's the same mentality as bullying - it's okay to poke fun at the LDS because they're small and different and can't fight back.

It was a funny concept, poor execution.

Had the team cheer been "F*** Mormons" it would have come across better.
 
Its upsetting...when jokes are made about controversial material and then wind up not being funny...that makes it offensive.
 
Punchline? Nah, too busy. The writer attempted to make a joke in the religious pool when his girlfriend called to tell him he's leaving him because he's a comedic writer with zero ability to be funny. Once he was dumped, he was too sad to humorously explain why the Jazz were to kill the Mormons.
 
You know how Saturday Night Live always goes way downhill after the first three or four skits? This article reminds me of skit number 1,364... but worse. "Fail" fails to convey what a massive failure this is. Whoever wrote it should never be allowed near a keyboard again. And no, I'm not Mormon, but I know for certain this sorry excuse for humor wouldn't be tolerated regarding any group whose rights are protected. Publish a version substituting the Pistons and the Muslim population around Detroit and see how well that goes over.

How is that hate speech? If that's your definition I'd say it's a pretty broad one.

As for the Onion piece, it is a weak effort at humor from a source that is usually much funnier than that. Even best satirists sometimes misfire.

The LDS Church is relatively small but as for not being able to fight back--you referring to the multi billion dollar organization that mobilized millions cash and in kind and thousands of followers to lead the effort to pass Prop 8 in Calif?

I think the LDS Church is quite capable of fighting if it chooses to.
 
I think the article wasn't well written, the joke wasn't funny, and overall it was a lame attempt. Again, would the article have been as easy to shrug off as just stupid if it were the players on the Golden State Warriors saying, "Kill the Gays?" I think that the Onion would have been blasted as hatemongerers and bigots. I think it's an interesting double standard that the Onion is excused away for this but Tracy Morgan was destroyed in the media for a stand up show where he said that if his son were gay he'd kill him; of that if gays can take a d*** they can take a joke... Tracy Morgan is a comedian after all.
 
All this talk of a double-standard .. maybe it is .. I think the difference, however, is that gays would likely be offended, blacks would likely be offended, I think LDS folk are less likely to be offended .. more able to laugh it off (if it were funny). It's like the double-standard of white jokes .. who really gets offended? I'm not saying that one group is proud and the other is not (NOTHING like that). I simply believe most people understand the where you can cross the line and where you can't.

The LDS that I know live for and embrace persecution, if anything, they'd be offended that this piece doesn't persecute enough. Ha!

And, again, I'm not LDS.

There's a huge difference between race, sexual orientation, and religious belief. Religious belief is a belief, it consists of set of ideas that have profound consequences for believers and non believers alike. All beliefs and ideas are and ought to be subject to criticism, satire, etc. Race and sexual orientation are benign, inherent characteristics of individuals that affect no one else and that are and ought to be irrelevant and are thus subject to different standards in how we approach them.
 
The Onion is usually hit or miss. This was a miss, but it wasn't that offensive unless you are a baby.
