What's new

Interesting that Hayward went with the peace sign. Please don't peace out G-Time!!!

The only scenario I can envision him leaving is for Boston. Even if he does have stronger relationship with Brad Stevens than he does Snyder, Utah still seems like the better fit. Gobert seems to compliment (stylistically) Haywards game much more than a Isaiah Thomas would.

Though the Jazz clearly have some important upcoming roster decisions (aside from hayward), Boston (even despite their extreme surplus of young talent/draft picks) isn't exactly the most stable situation as they still have to max IT, make a decision on Avery Bradley (who won't be cheap to re-sign), & acquire the inside presence they currently lack while working around the burden of having a declining, maxed Al Horford on the payroll.

By no means am I assuming that he returns, but I do believe the odds are in our favor. From everything I've seen/heard, he seems like the type of player who would be driven to see this through, especially considering he's been here from the beginning, played a major role in turning the franchise around, & has seen not only that the FO is committed to winning but that they've assembled a core that has the potential to presumably become legitimate title contenders in the somewhat near future (assuming the right moves are made).

That said, even if he were to leave, Gobert is still one of the best building blocks in the league & the FO would would still have some reasonably valuable assets (Favors, Hood, Exum, Burks, Lyles, draft picks) to go with plenty of cap space. Regardless of how this off-season plays out (assuming DL doesn't suddenly turn into David Khan), I am extremely optimistic about the future of this team.

The only other scenario I could see would go something like this ---

a) The Lakers get into the Top 3 of the draft lottery (with a little help from the league wink-wink).
b) Paul George throws another fit and says he wants to go to LA, will only re-sign with LA (like Dwight Howard and Chris Paul did)
c) The Lakers trade their top-3 pick and a young player to Indiana for Paul George.
d) Hayward decides to go to LA to join Paul George and live in Southern California.
e) Hayward, Paul George and whoever's left (e.g., Brandon Ingram) try to recruit another good player (like CP, Lowry, Blake, etc.)

Then compose a similar scenario with the Celtics --

a) The Celtics get into the top 3 of the draft.
b) Paul George throws a fit and says he only wants to go to LA or Boston.
c) The Celtics trade assets including their pick to Indiana for George. They could also pursue Butler from Chicago.
d) Hayward joins IT, PG/Butler and Horford in Boston.

Now he's all but guaranteed to make the ECF for the next 3 years.

Hayward would be leaving what, like $50M on the table and would be forfeiting his chance at a super-max deal next year to do the above, but I suppose it could happen.

If the Jazz can make a good move or two, they could be in the top 3 in the WC and be pretty competitive too.

Of course, Chicago and Indiana could block these deals by simply refusing to trade their All Star players until the trade deadline next year, in which case Hayward is all the more likely to stay in Utah.

The wild card is Boston has a top 3 pick. If they get #1 in particular, could swing alot of deals and may convince Hayward his chances are high of winning a ring.

Yeah, but I think to really convince Hayward the Celtics would have to trade that pick for a ready All Star like George or Butler. (See my post above.)

If the Celtics draft Fultz or Ball, they're still only rookies and they're best at PG where Boston's best player currently plays.

If the Celtics draft Tatum or Jackson, they're still only rookies and play the same position as Hayward (and last year's pick Jaylen Brown).

And neither of those picks change the fact that the Celtics don't rebound or defend well in the paint.

Thomas, Hayward, Horford and one other good player gets the Celtics to the ECF, but it probably doesn't put them ahead of the Cavs during the next season or two, notwithstanding the fact that Horford is on the wrong side of 30.

The Celtics a) have to get a great pick and b) need to trade the pick for an All Star this summer, in time to recruit Hayward.

The Jazz can progress to be top 3 in the west, while the Celtics should be top 3 in the east. I'm not sure this is enough for Hayward to give up $50M to change teams.

Important to note: A lot of this falls on if PG makes the All-NBA team this year. If he does, Indy can offer him the DPE which should give them enough confidence in keeping George that they become unwilling to trade him, or at least unwilling to give him away for any small haul.

I agree that Boston undoubtedly has more than enough assets to make their roster even more appealing than it already is (acquiring PG/Butler/etc, signing Blake Griffin, etc). But, while adding any of those players to a core of IT/Horford/Hayward would instantly make them a legitimate threat, that team would likely still be fundamentally flawed in areas that are crucial to playoff success (primarily def/reb, as someone previously mentioned)

While Utah may lack the plethora of assets that Boston has, the combination of Hayward & Gobert has legitimate championship potential & with the right addition(s), this team appears to be on the brink of an extended championship window. Whether the FO will be able to acquire that third star (assuming Hayward re-signs) is another subject, but this season showed that this current roster is just starting to scratch the surface of it's potential & I would be surprised if Hayward doesn't recognize that.

Hayward would be losing a hell of a lot more than "a few extra mil" if he was going to go to the Warriors or Clippers.

Help an old fart out here with some numbers. Far as I can see it is like 4% per year. Not much off a $150 million contract right?

You folks read a lot in a throw-away gesture. The insecurity shown on this board is mind-numbing. Hayward is going to go where he can get the most money, and if the money is equal, he will re-sign with the Jazz.
