So my laptop just died and I'm sick of these crappy pc laptops that crap out after a year. So for those that have IPads......are they able to replace a pc laptop? I dont so much crazy stuff besides writing papers/surfing the net.

Also can they print?

no
they are no replacement. ipad is a very closed system. so if you jaibreak it then maybe just maybe it might replace a pc.

also note you will only have 32gb/64gb of space.
you cant just use an external drive. so in short it is far from a replacement. just a addition.

for the price you are better off bying a laptop/desktop. and then late ron as addition a ipad or some other tablet

My son has an iPad 2 and my wife an iPhone 4 and my daughter got one of the ultra-cheap HP tablets when they liquidated. They are all just toys. There is nothing practical about them, realistically. Stick with laptop or desktop until the technology matures enough to handle the same tasks as efficiently. They are fun toys, no doubt, but toys nonetheless.

with a tablet you can do fun stuff though.

for example i have a fileserver(nas_ with movies/music/pictuers, 2 pc's and a mediaplayer connected to stereo and my tv. so i can use a tablet or phone(android or ios) to browse the database and start a movie on the tv. or send music to the stereo. just watch some pics. or acces anny other file from the nas
i could flick light switches on and off in the house. control some options on my pc from the tablet remotely . a tablet isnt just a toy in the right hands but a powerfull Usefull remote/wireless monitor. but on its own its just some worthless toy :P. not worth 300-500 euros

I don't think an ipad can replace a pc. Not yet.

Wait until Microsoft releases Windows 8 (next year). The tablets running Windows 8 will absolutely be laptop replacements. Apple and Android will have to make their tablets laptop replacements also if they want to keep up.

no "power users" will always need a desktop for productivity
The power users that require a desktop will be so few and far between that they will be insignificant in the overall usage.

Most users will be just fine with a tablet. Just like most users are just fine with a laptop right now (even though desktops are more powerful for the power users).

Check out the new Amazon tablet. I have mine pre-ordered. My work will mod it to accept push from our enterprise server and I can even run our ERPS and WMS on it. It will fairly easily handle email and basic doc viewing and such, as well as internet of course including, from what I have heard, a very slick new browser with flawless (grain of salt there) flash support. And the price is just incredible.

Downside, it lacks any camera at all, and also has no option for 3G/4G yet, although in future iterations it will in all likelihood pick up these as options/standard offerings. It is more or less the same hardware as the Playbook, but with infinitely better software and amazon content. I worked at amazon for 5 years or so and I have some friends that are there now working on the software and platform for this release and the things they tell me are fantastic. I have it on pretty good authority that they are working on a deal to offer lifetime whispernet through AT&T with purchase in a future release. I can't wait for the 3rd or 4th iteration of this tablet. I will post a review when I get mine in November (thanks to my contacts I am at the front of the list, yay).

I own a jailbroken iPad 2 and absolutely use it as a laptop replacement. Before jailbreak was released there were a few things I couldn't do with it, but now I am completely satisfied.

Having said that, there are certain things that some people need to do on their laptops that iPad simply cannot do. I get that. However, for me personally, it does everything I need, which is basically watching videos, Skype, music, web surfing, creating/editing Office files in my Dropbox, etc.

Btw, giving advice about something you have never used for an extended period of time is irresponsible. Seriously don't understand people who hate on the iPad just because it was created by Apple, satanic Apple! Why do people have a penchant for hating things that are new and different?

Edit: and yeah, that Kindle Fire looks pretty sick. If the web browser is as quick as they are making it out to be, that thing will be a winner and give the iPad some serious competition. Which is a great thing, as competition drives development and can lead to some big advances in technology for consumers.

Your laptops crap out after a year? WTF are doing to them? I still use a laptop with little to no problem that is 5 years old.
