Good radio host; horrendous play-by-play man.

I paid 10 bucks on the iphone to get audio for all the games with the main reason being that I don't have to listen to Locke.

Did you listen to Hot Rod towards the end? Oh man, it was rough. Like Ron Boone with brain damage. I think he stopped drinking on air and it was downhill from there.

I appreciate Locke's enthusiasm. He says a lot of stupid stuff, but it's kind of endearing.

Dude is like one of those kids in high school that will do anything to hang out with the cool kids, and everyone knows it but him. He tries way too hard.
 
I thought the definition of a "hack" was somebody who spewed opinions without actually knowing what they are talking about. If that is the case, Locke is certainly NOT a hack. You may not like his play-by-play but the guy NEVER goes in unprepared.

I can see how he annoys some during Jazz games, I find myself in that boat from time to time, but you cannot question his knowledge or game prep. I doubt there's any other commentator that puts in nearly the work that Locke does.
 
Interesting that its almost 50/50 in the hack-o-meter. I personally go back and forth. I like most of what he says but something he tries to pull stats out of nothing. For instance when the Jazz had play'd two games more then any other team except a couple east costers he was really dwelling on total playing time of starters. Obviously if you have 2 more games your starters will have logged more mins.
 
The JazzFanz Senate has voted. Due to not having a 2/3rds majority, the David Locke Hack Reform will not be enacted.
 
I wouldn't call him a hack. He's just terrible at play by play.
I never know what is going on when I listen to him.
The worst is when he goes off on some numbers crap DURING THE GAME, and I can hear the crowd react to something, then when locke finally finishes whatever he was talking about, he blitzes through the play by play as if it is happening at that moment, even though we all know from the crowd reaction that it already happened.

Even worse to put Boone with him. Now we have TWO guys who drone on forever about nothing and take too long to do it.

Not exactly. A hack is someone like a writer, journalist, pundit, talking head, or even a message board poster who shift his opinions in favor of his ideology or general stance on something. At least that's my understanding. Often applied in the realm of politics. IMO, other than fandom, this does not describe Locke. Honesty is counter to "hack-ism" (or whatever it would be called) and I think Locke is not afraid to call a spade a spade if the circumstance dictates. It's one reason that I have always liked him. Given, at times he does try to paint a rosier picture that what we see, but he almost never fails to back up his assertions.

Minus lottery, 4 ways Jazz can improve

Trades and free agency

As the Jazz scour free agency and investigate trades they have a looming advantage they have to be careful not to negate. The luxury taxes of the new collective bargaining agreement become more punitive starting in the 2013-14 off-season.

At this point no franchise in the NBA is better positioned to embark on this new era than the Utah Jazz. The Jazz only have four players under contract going into the 13-14 season, Hayward, Favors, Burks and Kanter.

If the new rules force teams to unload player or deadens the free agent spending the Jazz are positioned perfectly.

Therefore, as the Jazz look at possible additions to the roster, via free agency or trades they must first evaluate if it is worth the impact on the Jazz remarkable flexibility for the upcoming off-season.

Yet, this off-season the Jazz are positioned well to sign a Tier 2 free agent if they desire.

As the Jazz stand today they have nine players under contract and options to pick up with Jamaal Tinsley and DeMarre Carroll. Those 11 players total nearly $52 million in salary. The salary cap for the last season was $58 million. Under the new CBA the cap next year will be at least $58.004 or higher.

The new CBA has a non-tax payer exception which every non tax team can use to sign players. The 2012-13 expectation is $5 million.

This is important because the Jazz if they released the rights their free agents and amnestied the contract of Raja Bell have more cap space than the exception allowing them to offer more money than most teams for a mid-level free agent.

Again, any player they sign must fit into the long term plan and be willing to lose some of the flexibility they have for the off-season of 2013-14.

Ummm... The mid-level still doesn't apply to under-cap teams and the new room exception is only $2.5mm, so what the hell is Locke talking about?

Regardless, there are obviously deals to be had considering OJ Mayo was signed short-term to a CJ Miles level deal. I like Locke but he's not blowzin teh mindzz here.
 
Locke is my favorite radio guy by a long shot.

Not a fan of his play by play, but, nobody has come close to Hot Rod yet. It'd be really nice if the Jazz could find a guy that can actually convey what is happening in the game to someone not also watching the game. Hot Rod was fantastic, I could close my eyes and watch the game in my mind with him announcing. Not so with anyone they've got there since.
 
He can be annoying at times, but he is not a hack and occasionally I even check out his twitter and podcasts.

I agree. He tries too hard and ends up sounding foolish. Kind of like parents who try to use the latest catch phrases of their children.
But he is very knowledgeable and for that reason cannot be considered a "hack."
 
Speaking of hacks, I can't listen to Gordon Monson. I feel bad about it because I bet he's a real nice guy. I just don't care for his 'topics' or tangents. I want to hear Jazz talk, even if its stuff I disagree with. That's where I miss Locke on my drive home. He's a geek but he wants to talk Jazz and I want to listen. Monson seems like he wants to talk about anything but sports. He's like me when my girl wants to talk about her nieces and nephews and I go into "how can I get away" mode. Imagine having a job where 4 hours a day you had to talk about your significant others nieces and nephews. I feel for Gordon, but I miss Locke.
 
He is a god awful terribly obnoxious announcer but as a sports talk radio guy there isn't anyone in Utah I would rather listen to.
