Is SLC the only NBA city where......?

How can the Jazz be considered more popular than college football here. The Jazz will pull a big trade, say moving Deron Williams, and I'll turn into the radio to gather opinions. And what will they be talking about? What 3rd string linebacker will be redshirted for BYU.

IT makes me SO MAD!

But, that's just me. I accept that local football is more popular for most of the local market, otherwise they wouldn't cater the talkshows to them so much. The give the people what they want, I'm sure.

Lots of raiders fans live out of their area as well. Lots of Raiders fans where I live.

Taking outside fans into consideration potentially changes some of these results quite a bit. For example, LA could look like this:

Most popular LA-based team amongst LA-based fans: Dodgers
Most popular LA-based team amongst fans worldwide: Lakers
Most popular team (any location) amongst LA-based fans: Chivas de Guadalajara

Need Vinylone's input on this. When does he get released, again?

If it was by merch sold than there would be no way to differntiate between fans out of their local area and those within it.

despite the high attendance at cfb games here in the state, i think the jazz are the best supported team

Why would that be a good measure? It doesn't include merchandise acceptance! I guess adding total local TV viewers with stadium spectators and popularity of newspaper coverage would be way more appropriate. I don't see how willingness to buy the colors of the franchise is in any way indicator how good a fan one is?

I am not saying it should. It was mentioned earlier in this thread as a potential measurement of popularity. I was just remarking on it and how it would not differentiate between fan locations.

I'm sure there is data that differentiates location.

Attendance and spectators isn't good because when comparing different sports there are different #'s of games. Of course Football is going to get more viewers because there are only a handful of home games every year.

But basketball has 41 home games. While football has only 8 home games if I'm not mistaken. so 8*100k or 40*20k is the same result in total attendance. But TV numbers could be normalized for example to expectation of the whole league in market share at a given time.
Just sayin' that merchandise sales is the worst possible way imo.
I for my part don't wear merchandise unless it's looking really cool and I consider myself 10 times the fan of the guy who will buy his kids bedclothes(No pun intended PKM)

Athletics and Raiders are probably still more popular. Probably Stanford too.

San Antonio is still going to have more football fans. Texas lives and breathes football no matter where you are.

Same thing for Florida.

Ummm... no. I live in San Antonio. The spurs are, without a doubt, the biggest thing here. The second biggest thing would be University of Texas (an hour and a half up the road). Third goes to Texas A&M. Fourth to the Cowboys, fifth to Houston Texans.

Agree to disagree, my friend lives there as well and says its still Texas Longhorn territory.

I know hundreds of people who live there and let me tell you, your friend is in the minority

This discussion all boils down to our own opinions. Who we think is most popular in any given area.

People make it out to football games more though because there are only 8 of them at home, and only 16 televised. Most of them come on during Sunday, when a lot of the country is off work. Football is just set up perfectly to where there will always be high attendance and ratings.

I think merchandise is just a good way of showing how much support a team has. The most popular player in the NBA usually has the highest jersey sales, so it would make sense that the most popular sports team in a certain city would have the most sold jerseys/shirts/etc. Also, most sports merchandise is pretty evenly priced. It cost about the same to get any sport's team t-shirt, and basketball and football jersey's are similarly priced also.
