What's new

Jae Crowder is ***

You’re going to get a dude that gums up the game for the opponent and has his teammates back no matter what.

That **** matters.

Meh...sometimes that leads to matador defense and/or easy free throws for the other team. Jae's "toughness" or whatever you want to call it went both ways too. Jae's defensive activity was as up and down as his shooting. The ability to be "tough" and fake fight doesn't necessarily overlap with the toughness that helps you win games. Royce was taking cheap shots at Brunson....but I would rather him show the mental toughness to stay engaged on defense. Jae was always there for scuffles, but was often a space cadet when it came to actual basketball. I don't think he really gumed up the game for opponents, I think he made it easier for them to execute their offense.

We have sorely lacked Jae Crowder the last three postseasons. We lack his energy, toughness, and defensive versatility. That whole fun 2018 run had his fingerprints all over it. Just like the last two finals teams he was on.

We can nickle and dime him all we want, but we missed him in a huge way.

Also a thing on Royce, does anyone remember to start the year he was putting up big steal games? I think something definitely happened to him and he's playing through a significant overuse injury that is hampering his explosiveness.

Locke mentioned he thought Royce was fighting through something as well. He gave the stat that Royce was the 5th best PNR defender last year and 85th this year. His rebounding is down this year as well. I still don't think he looks that bad.

I really believe this is more of our trash defensive scheme and culture than it was Jae. I feel like Utah is where perimeter defense goes to die.
