What's new

Game Thread Jan 13, 2023 07:00PM MT: Jazz vs. Magic

Thoughts:

- It's hilarious that Lauri is suddenly getting a star whistle. I love the NBA. I promise you he wouldn't have gone to the line on half of those plays last season, as some were really borderline fouls. Not complaining though. A point is a point. He's getting the benefit of the doubt now, and he's earned it.

- Other than that, tough game for LM. Our spacing absolutely sucked so Lauri was met with a wall of meat every time he did one of his curls. The Magic were even able to direct him away from the basket when he received the ball, and in those situations I'd like Hardy to design hi-lo actions where Lauri could do a drop pass to a center right under the basket, with the attention of the interior defense at the FT line area. Now we just kind of stood around and he was forced to pass it back out. It shouldn't be that easy to take away the curl. But as I said... bad spacing is the main culprit.

- I love Kessler.

- I've been squinting hard and trying to like NAW at the PG position because we have so few options there, but I just can't. He's a terrible ballhandler at that spot. I never feel like the rock is safe with him. He's also the type of guy who will swish three rainbow perimeter shots in a row and airball the next three. You never know what you're going to get. I still don't really know what NAW is as a player - he's an awkward tweener in so many ways. Not sure he has any trade value but I can't see him as a future rotation player either.

- I know Ochai had nice +/- numbers and he definitely hustled, but man... he disappears completely out there. There were times I was shocked to realize he was on the court. Sure we're not passing him the ball at all, but still. He also plays very small for someone who's an extremely athletic 6'5'' with a big wingspan. He needs to become much more effective on the "D" part of 3&D to really stick in this league.

- Sexton. That dude is all heart. Sure his shot selection was somewhat questionable at times, but IMO we absolutely need this guy off the bench. Trading him would be a terrible decision. This would have been a loss without Collin.

Gobert's aura was a lot better. Defending the paint was easier because teams gave up. Fools are still out there challenging Kessler and sometimes they get through, get him in foul trouble, or he just gets worn.

Gobert was/is an elite perimeter defender as well (I haven't watched him this year.)

Here is the thing though. You WANT the opponent to challenge you best defender rather than your worst ones imo. So goberts aura was better but maybe thats a bad thing. Instead of going against gobert (a bad idea and bad shot to take) they would say nope and take a smarter, better, shot.

I dont know. You make a good point about goberts aura.

Listening to Locke today he talked about how Hardy said that NBA bodies were tough of Kessler as he just wasn't solid enough for the star centers, who would just push him under the basket and bully him. It makes sense that they tried to hide him from those matchups, at least for the first few months. He also talked about how Abaji wasn't yet ready for the speed and athleticism of the league. How he would stop an initial move on defense then straighten up. You could do that in college but in the NBA, people are just setting you up and then they put you on skates. Boone pointed out that it was the same issue that plagued Alec Burks. I don't he never really unlearned it. I suspect that "unlearning" that has been a primary focus before turning him out there to be barbequed.

Ya i often see people be critical of the young guys.
As if clarkson and KO dont have poor/bad habits/tendencies. As if conley isnt a horrendous defender.

Is Wendell Carter Jr good? He's looked pretty good whenever I've watched him. Why does he pull up his glasses on free throws?

Both offenses were pretty rough. I'm not going
to give any credit to the defenses either. A lot of unforced turnovers and not a lot of ball movement.

Kessler was great, Sexton with some nice plays. Overall not a great performance for us over such a bad team.

WCJ is good. Crazy that the Bulls drafted him and Lauri in back-to-back drafts.

Good post. I will say ochai was very noticeable and looked very big and athletic on that block against the backboard. Holy **** he got up there.
I think he just isn't being allowed to do much on offense right now for whatever reason. I bet he is better than he is being allowed to show.

Orlando is starting to figure things out. They were 11-6 in their last 17 before we played them. They started out terribly though, which will happen when your two key players are a rookie and a sophomore.
