Jazz a 3rd team trading partner?

Why would we want to help the Lakers? Seriously, the national media think everyone should help the Lakers/Knicks/Bulls/Miami. Gasol would have been fine four years ago but I wouldn't want that contract either.

Millsap cannot consistently play the 3.

That is an ignorant statement. To say definitely that he can't do it is ridiculous. Millsap is a guy I would never want to pigeon-hole or doubt for that matter.

He'll provide a HUGE advantage for us on the offensive end as ***** SFs try to guard him, and he will stay with and out-muscle them on D.

Mark Gasol here would be great, Pau, as others have noted, was showing some serious decline last year. If he could still be a force, NO WAY the Lakers would trade him. Fortunately, KoC ain't goin' for Pau, unless the Lakers want Okur...

sheridanhoops If there was a third team on LAL-NO talks I would think maybe it's Utah sending Al Jefferson to NO, with Pau going to Jazz. Pau>AJ, younger.
Yeah not only is Pau 30 and Jefferson 26 - but Gasol has logged over 26,000 career minutes while Jefferson is under 15,000 - and that's not even counting Olympics and international play for Spain.
If Utah was ever going to make a Jefferson-for-Gasol trade - the time to do it would've been when Deron Williams was still on the team. At that point I would've preferred Pau to Al. Presently I don't think either player can be a #1 option on a championship team, so I'll take the younger player with the shorter contract.

No way - don't want any part in a 31 year old, declining physique on a near-max deal for 3 more years! Can you imagine Pau:

1) Starting and taking quality time away from Favors/Kanter; or
2) Become the most expensive back up PF/C player in history

Thanks but no thanks, KOC won't be a part of that - no way. Remember - we only acquired Jefferson in the first please to appease DWill.

Just bear with Jefferson for 1 more year until Favors and Kanter develop. Start Favors and Kanter at C and PF respectively by the end of the season. Keep Millsap as a solid backup PF and somehow get a solid backup C (ala Asik) then we're OK.

IMO - KOC will stand pat this "offseason". We have too many new players at the moment - I think he knows he needs to be patient - and I think he will be.

We don't want Pau at all. I would rather have his brother. Pau is weak that is why the Lakers don't want him and we shouldn't either.

Yes, the Lakers only won two NBA championships and went to one NBA final AFTER Pau joined the team, while consistently making first or second round playoff exits BEFORE he joined the team.

Yep, soft as hell. Why would anyone want the guy?

Never let actual critical thinking intrude on cliches or conventional wisdom.

If we are sending Al Jefferson to NO, why don't we just cut LA out of the deal and get Chris Paul instead of Pau Gasol. I like...

PG-Paul
SG-Burks
SF-Hayward
PF-Millsap
C-Favors

with Harris, Kanter, Miles, etc. coming off the bench. We've got more balance, plus a younger, better player in the deal. Much better than, imo...

I don't think Pau was as good as everyone made him out to be in 2010 (during the '09-10 season David Locke actually argued he'd take Pau over Dirk) but I don't think he's nearly as bad as people think after the Dallas series. I still think he's one of the best bigmen in the game and a true difference-maker at both ends - although outside of international play I don't think he has the physical or mental toughness to be the #1 guy on a championship-caliber team. But as your 2nd-best player - he's about as good as it gets.

Reason I don't want him on Utah is he has alot of years (3) and money ($57 million) left on his deal, is aging (31), and has alot of mileage (26,000 minutes not counting international play) - all of which goes directly against what we're trying to do in Utah - never mind the fact we don't have an alpha-dog on the roster to allow him to thrive as a 2nd-banana. Pau's still very good, Jazz are just moving in a different direction.

I don't necessarily disagree with anything you say. I wouldn't want to pay Gasol's salary, as I don't think he'd push the Jazz over the top, and I do believe he is likely to have started on the downward slope of his career. I do think, however, that Gasol is an example of someone who got labeled as 'soft' at some point by someone, which eventually turned into convention wisdom. (This conventional wisdom conveniently confirms the other conventional wisdom saying that Euros in general are 'soft.') Gasol was the #2 player on a team that won two finals and lost another (and without him the Lakers would probably have never even made the finals in any of those years), and to blithely dismiss him as 'soft' or 'weak' is just dumb.
