Jazz and Knicks discussing Donovan Mitchell trade per Shams Charania and Tony Jones

The Knicks literally don't even want to give up RJ Barrett, wtf is this trash.

Even Ferguson laughs at this rumor.
Monty can't even read the internet right... we aren't trying to keep RJ Barrett out of the deal... just would rather have picks back. But of course his understanding is we are refusing to take him.

I wouldn't be surprised to see DM in a Jazz uniform to start the season. It sounds like Ainge and the Knicks aren't close and hardly anyone else has the necessary assets.

I would. He’s in New York right now, meeting with fans, having fun and being relatively accessible. The moment he has to fly back to utah for training camp, the media and fans will lose their ****. CAA has to be pushing buttons behind the scenes to make this happen.

Jalen Brunson has his press conference tomorrow. Gonna be a lot of pressure in the next 48 hours imo.

Let's assume that neither team actually wants RJ Barrett on their team long-term.

So the Knicks will be looking to deal him to get additional draft assets (to give to Utah), and cheaper players who can fit into roles alongside a guy like Donovan.

Who would really want RJ? Would the Pacers do something like RJ Barrett/Cam Reddish for TJ McConnell/Chris Duarte/Jalen Smith/Indy 2025 Pick/Cleveland 2023 pick?

Knicks could keep all the players, they would just have to give us the two picks. Maybe that would let them keep their own 2029 pick.

DA might be using this to teach Donovan a life lesson. Make him come back to Salt Lake with his tail between his legs.

I'm pretty sure your trade was just to throw out an example, but Indiana really likes Duarte. I doubt they would do that deal.

I think RJ would have a handful of suitors... I get the feeling the Knicks fans and FO really really wants to keep him.

If we are playing the game though... Washington, Sacramento, Orlando, Miami, Cleveland, Memphis, would all be teams I think that would be willing to do some good draft capital for him. I don't think Indy would give up their own picks without protections.

He's also 26 years old and is a dude who is most likely going to cap out as a role player.

Indiana can't sign top end talent. Barrett at least gives them someone to build around and he theoretically fits well with Haliburton. They were willing to reach and overpay Ayton to get a guy who could develop into an All-Star.

They can still be pretty bad this year and draft their 3rd guy.

Sure, but if they deal RJ can they create enough room to sign Jaylen Brown to a max in UFA?

Would having Donovan insure you could sign Brown?

There is a REALLY simple way for the Knicks to make Barrett truly untouchable. And this is also the way to act like you actually value him at the level of an untouchable asset - give him the max.. NOW! You give him the max now and he's off the table automatically. But that's not what the Knicks are doing.

IDK what the plan is there... just reporting what I hear from Knicks fans and rumors is they seem to really want to keep him.

If Brown wants to sign there you might be able to do a sign and trade using Barrett next year. He's a guys in 12 months I could see having a lot more trade value or a lot less... depending on how he plays this year.

I do think Donovan is viewed as the "first star" and they want to pair him with another... Brown would seem like a guy that fits the bill.

Why won't this just happen already? Motherfuddpucker!!!

Ideally I think they want to keep him and have Mitchell, see how he plays next to Brunson/Mitchell, then decide what to do with him. Obviously the confidence level isnt super high.

I might actually use the trade possibility to get some negotiating power. "if you want to stay here for sure sign this below max extension and its done".

IMO they are keeping him as a way to lower the ask on picks... if they truly don't value him at max and at the same time he wants the max.
